Snegur who was a former communist guaranteed independence of Moldova and demanded approval from the west positively. Moldova declared independence from the Soviet Union in August, 1991, but it develops into a breakdown with the Moldavia popular front of October that Snegur objected to immediate reunification with Romania. As a result, I will run for a presidential election as an independent in December, 1991.

The equal was not, and a vote boycott campaign by the popular front side ended in failure, and Snegur was elected the President. Because it was state policy on language, and Snegur was like pro-Romania, the Slavic pro-Transnistria district where there was many it declared independently separating it from Moldova in spite of past process and developed for the military power dispute that the Moldova side dispatched the armed forces in Transnistria for it, and started an attack, a lot of casualties.

At the time of President holding the office, I got independent approval of Moldova from higher than in 130 countries in a short term and joined international mechanism more than United Nations and 40. However, the economic situation suddenly turned worse, and the overseas emigrants of the nation increased, and the education level decreased, too.

I formed Moldovan revival and agreement party in August, 1995 and took office as the chairperson.
