Blue Brain

Blue Brain

Blue Brain (blue brain) was a project aiming at finally building computer simulation of the whole human brain at a molecular level and was started in 2005 [1]. The structure study of the brain is a purpose. Brain and Mind Institute which led IBM and Henry Markram of the Swiss Confederation college of engineering Lausanne school in Lausanne of Switzerland in May, 2005 started as a joint project [1].

The early aim of the project is to simulate the neocortex column (neocortical column). With the neocortex column, it is thought with the smallest functional unit of the cerebral neocortex said to control thoughts. 2mm in height, vertical width are 0.5mm each, and the size consists of approximately 60,000 nerve cells. I am going to simulate a rat thing at first (the structure resembles a human thing closely, but the nerve cell count is 10,000 as for the synapse 108). More than the past ten years, Markram made the neuronal model in the neocortex column and a connection-related map.

The project operates simulation software on super computer Blue Gene [1]. I use in combination software called NEURON of Michael Hines for MPI-based Neocortical Simulator (NCS) which Phil Goodman developed for software. So-called neural network is not used for this simulation, and an exact neuronal model is used biologically.

It is told construction of the first simulation to take approximately two years. The result of the real creature experiment is weighed against a laboratory finding by the simulation afterwards.

As the next stage, the project is going to part in two next directions.

  1. Construction [1] of the simulation of "the molecular level." I am suitable to study an effect of the gene expression.
  2. I plan simplification so that the simulation of plural columns is enabled and perform the simulation that connected large number of columns group and finally aim at the simulation of the whole cerebral neocortex (there are approximately 1 million cortex columns to human neocortex).
