The Bonin Islands
The Bonin Islands (おがさわらぐんとう) are groups of islands of the northern part of Ogasawara Islands. I belong to Ogasawara-mura, Tokyo. Area 71.4km². Alias Bonine Islands (English: Bonin Islands). This comes from the name called the uninhabited island (ぶにんしま, ぶにんじま) of the Edo era. Ogasawara Islands are Ogasawara Islands in English.
General statement
The Bonin Islands consist of three chains of islands of Mukojima chain of islands, Chichijima Islands, Hahajima Islands from the north. In addition, Nishinoshima, volcanic islands, Minami Torishima, Okinotorishima is included in Ogasawara Islands elsewhere. Therefore, Ogasawara "archipelago" and the Ogasawara "group of islands" are often confused.
It is only Chichijima and Hahajima of the Bonin Islands that a private citizen lives in Ogasawara Islands. Many public offices are concentrated in Chichijima including Ogasawara-mura government office.
The Bonin Islands are the top of the Ogasawara ridge geographically. I am located approximately 130km east from Izu Islands, Nishinoshima, volcanic islands in the top of seven islands, Iwo-To ridge. It is a volcano of the early period of Tertiary period, and the active volcano does not exist. The andesite of the kind called ボニナイト (boninite) is seen.
