Summary

Oita-shi is one of the major cities of East Kyushu that is almost located in the center of the Oita shore part. I have a population of approximately 480,000 and receive designation of the core city. It is the first place city where approximately 40% of population in Oita are concentrated and is the center of the Oita urban area of approximately 700,000 population. The current city limits have ever belonged to Oita-gun and Kitaamabe-gun (until the early period of Meiji Kaifu-gun).

It was old, and Kokufu of the Bungo country was put and was called in the prefecture (there is a crucian carp). It developed as a castle town of Otomo in the Middle Ages and became the center of the Christianity propagation in cause, Japan of the protection of Christian daimyo Sorin Otomo for the age of civil strife, and European medieval culture opened a flower.

I grow rapidly with the advance of heavy and chemical industries such as the steel industry, the chemical industry as a manufacturing town for the rapid economic growth period, and in late years a location of the electronics industry advances.

Geography

From Takasagocho, Oita-shi. It is Oita Port, Gulf of Beppu in the front right. It is Mount Takasaki in National highway No. 10, the depths in the left
Chuo-dori which extends to the north in front of Oita Station

I hold the delta which the Oita River and the Ono River formed and the Oita plains consisting of alluvial plains and the hill of the rotation and face the Gulf of Beppu of the Seto Inland Sea. The Ono River plays the Oita River from the west in the western part from the south in the eastern part of the city and flows into the Seto Inland Sea. The central city is in the river mouth part west of the Oita River. Mount Takasaki district of the neighborhood of border with Beppu-shi known as Japanese monkeys inhabiting and the Takashima district floating in 豊予海峡 are appointed in Setonaikai National Park.

In late years Oita Expressway, Higashi Kyushu Expressway are inaugurated in form to penetrate city limits to the east and west and are connected to National highway No. 10, National highway No. 210.

Increase of the population is remarkable by the development such as a shopping center or the new subdivision in the suburbs area in the city.

History

Sorin Otomo image (the Oita station square)

Ancient

In the ancient times, around current Oita-shi is called Oita-gun (おほきたのこほり) and is supposed when Kokufu of the Bungo country was put in slightly (current Furugo) along lower Oita River where I came off to the south from the center of the current city.

I say and named "碩田国 (おおきたのくに) and excellent づくべし, and, as for the name, according to "Bungo country topographical record," it is said to very large 哉, this county" that "碩田" came to be written "considerably" later "considerably" when the Emperor Keiko visited this ground. It is understood that the words of the Emperor Keiko described the state that many fields line up not the broadness of plains, but it may be really said that, in any case, I show that a rice field opened it for a long time to the Oita plains today because Hirano cannot say so much considerably to be very large.

Middle Ages

Otomo is appointed in the Kamakura era by the Bungo country protection; for bottoms in the Bungo country in the times of third 代当主大友頼康 (Joo era first year (1222) - Shoan era two years (1300)); did it, and was aboriginal. I am appointed the lief-guard of the Bungo country in (1333) for Genko era three years. When the Muromachi era began, the seventh 代当主大友氏泰 slightly moved a support castle to the north and held a hall near the Oita River river mouth (in the eastern part of the center of the current city equal to Kentokumachi). By the beginning of castle town where this ranged in current Oita-shi, the name of the town was called in the prefecture. The place name called current "Funaimachi" remaining in the city area center considerably and the mall called "Fifth Avenue in the prefecture" are these traces.

The hospital in first Western ceremony was established with the 21st present head of a household Yoshishige Otomo (宗麟) who took possession of the majority of Kyushu in Japan in the golden age, and I received European medieval culture, and the in the prefecture of the age of civil strife prospered. However, Otomo loses in rivalry with Shimazu and declines, and the in the prefecture is told to be burnt down, and to have been destroyed in 1586 by invasion of Iehisa Shimazu of (Tensho era 14 years). In late years, with consecutive grade separation business of the neighborhood of Oita Station and land readjustment business, remains of the in the prefecture from Middle Ages including the Otomo building trace to the age of civil strife are found and are appointed as an Otomo building trace on the historic spot of the country in (2001) in 2001.

After Yoshimune Otomo who succeeded 宗麟 was performed attainting of for the blunder at the position of Bunroku, I was subdivided, and the Bungo country was blockaded by feudal lords. Naotaka Fukuhara enfeoffed in the prefecture as for (Keicho era two years) in 1597 started the construction of a castle of the castle in the prefecture.

Early modern times

In the in the prefecture castle (large Wakejo), large-scale repair was performed by Shigetoshi Takenaka who became the ancestor of a lord of the feudal clan (Oita feudal clan) in the prefecture by (Keicho era six years), the meritorious services in war of the Battle of Sekigahara in 1601, and it was the scale of the in the prefecture castle (large Wakejo) which was the castle of the early modern daimyo for (Keicho era 12 years) in 1607. The castle town of Oita was also maintained by Shigetoshi and became the basis of the later prosperity.

According to the investigation of (Masanori two years), I had a population of 5,591 in 1712, and the in the prefecture of the Edo era was a castle town largest in Bungo.

Modern

When it was the Meiji era, the prefectural office of Oita was put in the prefecture and became Oita-cho by the municipality organization enforcement of (1889) in 1889. I incorporate 3 municipalities in (1907) in 1907 while the merger of cities, towns and villages called the great merger of the Meiji advances. It enforced municipal organization in (1911) in 1911. The population of (1920) was 43,150 people for 1,920 years.

Postwar period, modern

Former Oita city limits (from March 10, 1963 to December 31, 2004)

In cities of the whole country, Oita-shi is one of the cities that suddenly grew up during these past 40 years.

The 1950s slightly had less population of Oita-shi in a little less than 100,000 people than Miyazaki-shi and was secondly small prefectural seat next to Saga-shi in Kyushu (except Okinawa) [2].

I planned development by the industrial promotion and aimed at the new industrial city designation in order to receive a benefit of the rapid economic growth when the 1960s began. When I took it off for a large merger with Tsurusaki City or Ominami-cho in (1963) in 1963 to meet population requirements and was appointed (1964) in the new industrial city in January in 1964, large factories such as Nippon Steel went into the coastal place. Development advanced from the previous rustic tn. to the manufacturing town that represented Kyushu rapidly, and Oita-shi was called "the honor student of the new product capital".

The population suddenly increased after the 1960s, and the population that was 210,000 people exceeded 400,000 at the time of the merger of (1963) in 360,000, the 1990s in 260,000, the 1980s in (1970) in 1970 in 1963 and showed remarkable increase to approximately double. A large-scale housing development was developed land for in sequence in the hilly areas of the penumbra, and the new subdivisions such as Jonan housing complex, Akeno housing complex, the Shikido housing complex became sprawl, and the specific suburbs environment named the ream was born [3].

In addition, with the development as the new industrial city, Nagasakiya, Daiei, Nichii, Jusco, a hypermarket of Kanto, the Kansai capital including Seiyu went a lot in front of Oita Station in the 1970s, and the station square downtown such as the suburbs city of the rare metropolitan area was formed in Kyushu with Tokiha of the local department store. Becoming it went ahead through the commercial doughnut, and all switched a business condition or the hypermarket of the center withdrew afterwards by 2009 [4]. On the other hand, I put アミュプラザ at Oita Station (2015) in spring in 2015, but the opening of business makes it.

I am appointed (1997) in the core city on April 1 in 1997.

By the great merger of the Heisei, Saganoseki-cho and Notsuharu-cho were incorporated into Oita-shi (2005) on January 1 in 2005. As of August, 2014, Oita-shi is a populous city to the fifth in Kyushu next to Fukuoka-shi, Kitakyushu-shi, Kumamoto-shi, Kagoshima-shi.
