LHD (plasma device)

The plasma device of the large-scale helical helio Tron type that LHD (Large Helical Device, large helical device) was produced for a nuclear fusion study by LHD project of Japanese natural science study mechanism National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS). A technique and peripheral device

  • Helical coil and ポロイダルコイル are established to make a magnetic field shutting in plasma. The helical coil is two coils wound up in a spiral and is installed to surround the doughnut.
  • A superconduction coil is used for a main coil of LHD and is the first among the world for a confinement of magnetic field nuclear fusion experimental device. In the helical type device except this device, "even Venn Dell Stein 7X plan" under construction is going to perform the experiment using the superconduction coil in German Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck Institute. In addition, China completes a device (EAST) using the superconduction in the Tokamak type in equal detached room child body physics laboratory in 2009.
  • Many apparatuses are prepared for a nuclear fusion study around a plasma vacuum container. In the case of this device, there are neutral particle irradiation equipment (NBI) to raise temperature of the plasma, ion cyclotron resonance heating arrangement (ICRF), electronic cyclotron resonance heating arrangement (ECH). In addition, a local island diverter changing a magnetic field locally, an exhaust removing impurities in the vacuum apparatus and various experiment observation equipment are attached.
  • As a result of having been provided in this device, ITER (Tokamak type) and JT-60SA (Tokamak type) of the atomic energy research and development mechanism in Japan where construction is pushed forward are made use even of now.

Technical commentary

  • There is each phase to realize an atom nuclear fusion reactor. It is a research reactor (this device equal to it), an experimental reactor (ITER equal to it), a demonstration reactor (the commercial device which demonstrates it, and runs) and a commercial reactor. The atomic nucleus fusion technology as of 2008 is equivalent for a phase equal to the middle of a research reactor and the experimental reactor.

  • For a more detailed study, a heavy hydrogen experiment is planned in LHD. しかし、周辺住民(多治見市、土岐市、瑞浪市)の合意を得るまでは実験を行わないとしており、定期的に説明会が行われている。
  • 現在は重水素を使った実験を行っていないため、核反応に伴う中性子は出ていない。しかし、将来期待されている重水素実験では微量の高速中性子が発生する。これを遮蔽するため、本体棟の隔壁はあらかじめかなりの余裕を持って設計されており、外部に対する被爆の心配は少ない。重水素実験では装置本体の放射化などが懸念されているが、核融合科学研究所では、法令に沿って適切に処理するとしている。
  • 本装置では三重水素を使った実験を行う予定はない。
