Space balloon

Space balloon

I photograph it over Hokkaido in 2014. I use a balloon for the weather observation.

The space balloon (space balloon) is a sky sport to perform the picture photography with the balloon from the stratosphere and the mantle.

It explodes in the sky, and the balloon loses it, but it is gone down by earth gravity, and the payload returns to the ground. I can read a picture by collecting the payload that returned. Because it is the device which used the cheap means called the balloon unlike a rocket, they attract attention because even a commoner can photograph a picture overlooking the earth from the space, and even an event and an advertisement, an experiment are used now. It is flown for the purpose of photographing it from height more than an altitude of 30km (kilometer) that there is almost none of the earth atmosphere. Like the radiosonde which the Meteorological Agency launches, it is kind of the substratospheric altitude balloon.

Because it is aimed for picture photography, unlike a substratospheric altitude balloon for the purpose of the weather observation, a camera, a GPS transmitter become the required machine parts.

History of the space balloon

As for the space balloon, a thing performed 放球 of on September 9, 2006 by a student of Cambridge University is confirmed; is oldest [1].

It gradually spread out in Europe and America and developed as a sky sport called space balloon afterwards. All the countries of the world, various groups carry it out and exist until a global meeting now [2].

Trend in Japan

Mountains area and the forest cover ratio are extremely high in the Japanese country [3]. Furthermore, as for the space balloon, there was a property to flow through the east to greatly receive influence of the jet stream, but possibility to sink was extremely high because it had a short Japan country in the east and west. The overseas above-mentioned precision is necessary for the space balloon in Japan to premise machine parts collection, and there was not the thing that it readily spreads out.

As for the first example, the TBS program thing which "jump out, and was carried out by Meisei Electric broadcasted in one of broadcast on science" June 9, 2009 is oldest in Japan. Meisei Electric is a manufacturer of the radiosondes. I launched a device equipped with a hi-vision camera in a balloon for the weather observation and let picture photography from sky 30km succeed. This is a first Japanese success example in the private enterprise.

Then, the photography of the space picture was performed with all celestial sphere cameras which I put on JAXA atmosphere ball at "a beach of the space" of NHK [4].

The first success example by the individual is photography from an altitude of 33km of Keisuke Iwatani on September 29, 2012 [5]. The development by Iwatani is continued; the present [when?] Then I carry out the display of 65 planes and am proud of the number of the nation's largest results and show technique widely. The conventional success example came close to a research organization and the specialized company, but enforcement in the small scale was enabled with this success example as a start.

In the group, space balloon of kikyu.org of Yamanashi rises to an altitude of 30km in June, 2013 and succeeds in collection. A picture is not clear whether you photographed it.

The first success of the space balloon by the high school student was carried out by a student of Sapporo Nippon University Senior High School in 2014 [6]. For the same period, the student of the Kitano Senior High School space Development Division lets you succeed [7].

Machine parts

I photograph it from the sky of Oregon approximately 30km. I use a weather balloon of 1,500g.

I use a rubber balloon used for a radiosonde of the weather observation. The PowerShot A series of Canon which the camera used by the small study of the university and a personal hobby is relatively cheap, and is lightweight is used well (I photograph the right photograph in PowerShot A470).

Because capacity of the battery decreases because of low temperature in the substratospheric altitude, I need attention. The machine parts such as cameras have to confirm a function in decompression, a low temperature examination device beforehand to prevent a trouble beforehand.

Cannot use some GPS receivers to prevent the deployment to the use such as the intercontinental ballistic missile by a trace of the COCOM (COCOM) regulation at the altitude more than 18,000m (59,000 ft) [8]; [9] [10].

I it as an advertisement

2011

2012

  • With "the balloon which wants to take space." of AC Japan TV radio, the newspaper ad But, it is an advertisement using the first space balloon carried out in Japan [12].

2014

  • I photograph a reward card as store advertisement of the nanouniverse backed by space. Is carried out in Japan, but, in the enforcement place, missing [13].
  • Musician TeddyLoid in the "BLACK MOON RISING EP" "UNDER THE BLACK MOON" trailer picture "distance of 2,000 light-year"
  • WEB handbill Shufoo とふなっしーの collaboration plan ふなっしーの space live [14]

2015

  • A music video of musician Polaris / atmosphere (Taikiken) collaboration [15] with balloon photographer Keisuke Iwatani
  • Space durability experiment [16] of the clock of Lumi Knox

Regulation by Japanese laws and ordinances

It is space balloon showing an expanse in Japan, but receives the restriction of Japan inside dimensions on carrying it out in Japan. You must carry it out after I apply and was accepted. In conformity with Aviation Act, I cannot carry it out to have effect to a plane when not after I coordinated it with a necessary medium concerned. In addition, you must use machine parts in conformity with Wireless Telegraphy Act because a GPS transmitter might conflict with Wireless Telegraphy Act. In addition, there is the use of amateur radio communications beyond the amateur duties that the Wireless Telegraphy Act enforcement regulations define and is unfavorable.
