Tsutomu Suzuki

The style of handwriting designer that Tsutomu Suzuki (sea bass Tsutomu from January 25, 1949 to May 6, 1998) left a big footprint for history of Japanese typeface design. I was from the laboratory of copying and established 字游工房 independently later.

Career

In 1969, I graduate from Institute of Tokyo designer, and it is entered the company by the laboratory of copying ("a phototypesetter research institute").

In 1972, I get the first place by "an Ishii Prize creation typeface contest" of the company. By adjusting this style of handwriting, a photocomposition clockface is released later as "スーボ". This style of handwriting was placed in "the Japanese typography yearbook" in the next year. At the time of this application, there was an opinion whether an employee of the company participated in the Ishii Prize who was an open contest, and fairness could keep, but the judge dealt by covering the full name on the occasion of examination.

In 1974, I get the consecutive first place in the third Ishii Prize twice. This style of handwriting later "スーシャ." But, not the thing which I fine-tune style of handwriting at the time of the receiving a prize and released, correction work enters by indication of president of laboratory of copying Yuko Ishii.

In 1989, I resign from the laboratory of copying. The corporation "字游工房" establishment. The member at the time is Suzuki and Osamu Toriumi (のちの 字游工房社長), three people of Keiichi Katada.

In 1998, I die at 49 years old.

スーボ

The second Ishii Prize prize winner. A very thick circle Gothic. The normal letter thinned the line of the part piled up in kanjis with much number of strokes, but this style of handwriting proposed the new design of the display letter by making "a deficit" to lines boldly. But it is said that it was hard application in a style of handwriting design every one character because it is unrelated to the brush strokes of the hand-written character and was based only on a sense of Suzuki about this stack.

スーシャ

スーシャ which was the next work was style of handwriting for exclusive use of the setting type horizontally to have the sharp element which reminded you of a Japanese sword whereas スーボ was a very thick circle Gothic. It may be said that it is italic type of 細明朝体, but a unique design is concentrated basically. The world knows that Suzuki is not a simple "excellent style of handwriting designer" by Ishii Prize first place acquisition with the different style of handwriting consecutively and really twice.

Vertical typesetting and setting type horizontally have the Japanese sentence printing type with the same style of handwriting because width is the same as the high length and breadth, but there are many opinions that balance is not good when I do setting type horizontally with style of handwriting designed in vertical typesetting Maine. While スーシャ was the print that I inclined slightly to smooth off eyes to the side in the Japanese book which a sentence of the setting type horizontally increased to, I made the flow that fell out in the top right corner by adjusting brush strokes and prevented inclining and from being seen. This is a reason described と such as "the sword".

ゴナ, this orchid tomorrow morning

ゴナ was style of handwriting designed by Masahiro Nakamura, but acted as the leader of project team where a style of handwriting family presented it. In addition, I was in a leading position in this orchid tomorrow morning project that was one of the drawing card style of handwriting of the laboratory of copying.

ヒラギノ

It is a style of handwriting family, and ヒラギノ has corner Gothic, a line book, circle Gothic tomorrow morning. As for ヒラギノ tomorrow morning, popularity is high for a designer as style of handwriting of the high qualities to be usable from the text to an entry with the first style of handwriting of 字游工房設立後 widely and is used for the strong magazines of visual characteristics widely, and it may be said that it is signboard style of handwriting of Dainippon Screen Mfg. In addition, it was adopted as a standard deployment font in macOS. Suzuki supervised the whole and I mobilized power of the staff of 字游工房 and was made. In 2005, I won a good design prize (communication design section).

游明朝体

As for the original name, tomorrow morning JK; (as for the code name, tomorrow morning A). Development was pushed forward as Ming-style of penmanship for the text of the 字游工房 original. Unlike ヒラギノ tomorrow morning, text composing type, that of pocket editions aimed for the style of handwriting that matched a period novel, and "I cross Shuhei Fujisawa" was developed for a password. Suzuki dies in the middle of this work.

The format is OpenType. Approximately 9,600 characters that increased the fictitious name for the agate for Adobe-Japan1-3 conformity. An attributive license of one year was 100,000 yen at first, but became 30,000 yen that there was no later on an expiration date.
