Basic concept
The basic way of thinking puts the small software called "an agent" on the computer for the monitoring. The agent watches a computer at some points of view. For example, through Windows Event Log, I watch a warning and the event that the application on the computer produces. In the agent, a forward does it to SCOM server when I detect a warning. A database is attached to the SCOM server, and the history of the warning is stored there. The SCOM server applies a filtering rule to the warning that I received and notifies a human being according to the rule (E-mail, pager) and starts some kind of workflows for cause solution to warning.
In SCOM, I call filtering rule group for specific monitoring target applications management pack. Microsoft and other software vendors provide management pack about each product, but there is the function that a user edites it in SCOM and can make newly. An administrator authority is necessary for the installation of the agent, the setting of the computer targeted for monitoring, management pack making, but can refer to the warning history in the general user.
I let plural SCOM servers cooperate and can watch it across Windows domain and a network border. Using Web Service, I can exchange warning information with other network management application.
Command shell
In Operations Manager 2007, the command-line interface called the command shell was introduced newly. I customized Windows PowerShell, and access data of Operations Manager and can operate it [3]. Like Windows PowerShell, it is based on object oriented programming and .NET Framework 2.0. A command and a function are expanded than PowerShell and can automate operation of Operations Manager [4].
