A studio building (the work which does not work by the three-dimensional constitution of the metal plate of the primary color) of 16m in height [2]. Characteristic

The flamingo is made of steel of 50 tons in weight and it is cinnabar red and is painted. The Cal da tried comparison with the product made in black steel office building group including neighboring federal government center buildings (Mies van der Rohe design) by painting in the cinnabar red [4] that came to be called "red of the Cal da" later [5]; [6].

It is complete rigid abstract structure, and the art form called this studio building which Cal da developed is a thing in contradiction to the mobiles moving by a flow of the air.

Production trust and public

The Cal da was consigned the design of the flamingo to based on the established international evaluation. An arched shape and the dynamic appearance that a huge studio building of the Cal da brought were demanded from the space among rectangular modern buildings [7].

The flamingo is the first work of art which the general procurement station in America entrusted you with based on a "percentage four art" program. Is decided to distribute 1% of business budgets to public art by the program [8]; [9].

The Cal da released the model of the flamingo on April 23, 1973 in Chicago art museum. A flamingo was released on October 25, 1974, the following day for the first time, and mobile "universe (Universe) of the Cal da product was released on the same day again in Sears Tower (current Willis tower), too". I was considered to be "a day of Alexander Calder", and the parade of the circus was carried out on the day [8].

Spatial of relationships

The beholder can perceive it on the bottom and the scale that is human by walking around the circumference while being a large-scale sculpture [4]. The shape of "the flamingo" suggesting the natural world, an animal kingdom shows the comparison that is clear with the interpretation that is re-TERAL in the sculpture of the times before it [10]. In addition, well-known examples of the constructionism to have the source from the structure that a small partial element was made in combination in Russia in the early 20th century include it [11].

The model of "the flamingo" is put at the post office in the federal plaza [5].
