The multi-protocol correspondence instant messenger that is proprietary for Microsoft Windows that Cerulean Studios developed Trillian. It can connect with AIM, ICQ, Windows Live messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Bonjour, XMPP, the plural IM services such as the Skype network (four latter implemented it in additional plug in in Trilliran Pro, but those plug in came to be included in Basic in Astra).

I was released as an IRC client of the freewares at first on July 1, 2000, and the first commercial printing block (Trillian Pro 1.0) was released on September 10, 2002. An origin of the names is character to come up to "Milky Way hitchhike guide" of Douglas Adams. In the former version of the official site, there was the link to his official site in the homepage with a photograph of the face of Douglas Adams.

4.1.0.23 that the latest edition at the present was released on January 14, 2010. There is the commercial version called Trillian Astra Pro with a free copy, too.

Function, the that it features it

Connection to plural IM services

Trillian can connect with plural IM services, and it is not necessary to carry out plural clients. I can have access to a plural number, and the same service can group connection in separate identifiers to prevent confusion. All contacts (contact information) are attracted by a list of one contact. Not only I can group according to IM service, but also the contact performs drag & drop freely and can constitute a group.

I express each IM service with the ball of the different color each in Trillian. The company LOGO of each service was used in the former version, but was deleted that I had a problem in a copyright. However, some skin still uses the conventional icon. The designer of Trillian made a model of the classification by the route map of London Underground [1].

In the Trillian Astra beta release, I support MySpace IM, Facebook Chat, Twitter.

Meta contact

I can gather up a contact to be vested in the same person to one entry on a list of contacts using a meta contact function in Trillian Pro to avoid overlap, and to simplify the structure of the list of contacts. The real contact is displayed with a meta contact into a tree form.

Activity history

Trillian Basic and Pro maintain a history in a text file and the XML file format that are plane with an activity history function together. There is a traceability function in Pro and can make bookmark on the history. By an XML-based history, log operation and a search become easy, and the future Extensions becomes easy, too [2].

Time travel

There is the function called the time travel function in Trillian Pro, and operation such as rewind, a stop, the forwarding is possible during the session of a video and the sound [3]. In addition, according to the commentary of the application, "the time travel to the future is impossible for the moment".

Wikipedia search

Both version after 3.0, Basic and Pro use the Wikipedia English version as a database and perform a real-time search. This function acts in a conversation window directly. If the investigation agrees when a user of either inputs a word during a conversation whether there is the row of the word to accord with a database file in Trillian, I touch a green underline in the word (row) and display it. When a user exceeds a mouse in the word, I download the opening section of the article of Wikipedia corresponding to it and display it as a tool tip. When a user clicks the word, I display the article by a Web browser.

Emotiblips

Emotiblips is a video version of decorated letter (emoticon). I can send the streaming of a video and the song to a partner during the session by the animation in real time. I can send MP3, WAV, WMV, a file such as MPG, but the QuickTime MOV file is not supported for the moment.

Hidden decorated letter

There is a decorated letter not to appear on the menu to version after 2.0, the decorated letter set of the default and can use it while I talk. There is the animation displayed decorated letter partly only in Trillian Pro [4]; [5].

Skin and interface

There is original skin engine SkinXML in Trillian. Various skin is developed and can download it from formal gallery and deviantArt [6].

In addition, there is language Stixe for the skin, too. This simplifies a cord to use by a meeting of the XML substance repeatedly basically and allows a skin producer to share graphics or a sound pack, the interface of XML and the decorated letter pack form.

designHazard designs the skin of the default. Trillian Cordillera was a default in Trillian 0.7x, but, in Pro after 1.0, Trillian Whistler becomes the default. There is the correction of some appearances at every major release.

Trillian Cordonata was adopted as a design of the new front end in Trillian Astra.

Plug in

Trillian is a closed source, but the Pro version is available for expansion by the plug in. For the plug in that Cerulean Studios oneself gives, there are spell-checking, a weather monitor, a minibrowser (for the AIM profile indication), the scroll indication of the musical piece title of Winamp, stock market monitor, an RSS feeding leader, plug in for the connection to conversation function, XMPP and Bonjour using the Logitech G15 keyboard. Besides, various plug in is developed, and there are the game plug in that can face it of chess and the checker, protocol plug in to send a NetBIOS message via Trillian, plug in to communicate with a client of Lotus Sametime, the automatic translation plug in of an E-mail checker, English by plug in, POP3 and the IMAP and the language of each European country to communicate with Microsoft Exchange. There is plug in SkyLian for Skype, too, but is not usable when I do not install Skype in itself.

The plug in is available from the official site free. But it is not available in many cases after Trillian Pro 2.

History

It begins and it

The first formula release was designed as an IRC client in version 0.50 of July 1, 2000. As for this version, a lot of bugs were replaced with 0.51 immediately very much on the same day. I comprised simple connection management capability and skin.

There is minor release twice, and, one month later, addition and the bug correction of the IRC function are carried out. However, most of Trillian at this point in time was nameless, and there was little number of the downloading, too.

Trillian at the time was ドネーションウェア. I accepted the contribution in PayPal.

Introduction of the compatibility

In version 0.6 that I released on November 29, 2000, directionality of the development greatly changed and came to be able to connect it to AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, MSN Messenger with one window at the same time.

There was already the software with a similar function, but Trillian could distinguish the contact of each IM service on a contact list definitely, and a point that original account registration was unnecessary was different.

One month later, I supported Yahoo! Messenger in 0.61 and prepared the skin for Christmas. At the same time, I established a forum for the Trillian community.

I repeated version up frequently these days, and the community grew big day by day. A contest of the skin is held in deviantArt, and a champion will design the skin of the default in the next version. I recorded 100,000 downloading on August 14, 2001.

I am to the leading role of "the IM war"

The community expected the next version with 0.64, but 0.70 was really released on December 5, 2001. I need five months for development and, judging from previous release distance, am very long.

As the function that there were the most demands, I implemented file transfer by all IM services in those days. The skin language had some corrections. In addition, I wore contact lenses, and main windows were listed (a status window was Maine), and the skin of the default became new Trillian Cordillera, too. Decorated letters more than 100 came to be included in a decorated letter set.

0.71 became the release on December 18, 2001. I supported AIM group chat and introduced the coding of the message by SecureIM quickly.

For the next several months, the number of the downloading of Trillian increased rapidly and achieved 5 million downloading 1 million downloading within six months on January 27, 2002. CNET, WIRED, BetaNews came to be taken up in various media of the world. One of the founders Scott Werndorfer catches the interview in TechTV in these days.

I noticed AOL being able to chat in AIM even if Trillian user did not download AIM client. After 0.72, Trillian released on January 29, 2002 will be troubled by the issue of connection in AIM [7].

AOL blocked the SecureIM access from Trillian client. The Cerulean side releases 0.721 avoiding this one day later. The fight with this AOL lasted several weeks, and Ceruluan released the patch which evaded 0.722, 0.723, 0.724 and a block of AOL in sequence.

According to the Internet audience rating investigation into Jupiter Media Metrix, the thing which was 344,000 unique users increases to 610,000 in April, 2002 in February, 2002. There were fewer these than other main IM networks, but Jupitor said that Trillian was always higher in reading time [8].

Commercial manufacture of Trillian Pro

On September 9, 2002, Trillian Pro 1.0 and free copy Trillian Basic 0.74 for business became the release at the same time. The fee for use of one year was 25 dollars, but it was said to the commercial version that free, the user who contributed it was available by then for one year.

Plug in to exchange SMS and a mobile messaging function, Web camera support in Yahoo! Messenger, notice of E-mail reception popup, news and weather and stocks information with a friend was added.

Trillian Pro was marketed as a client for a company to do the exchanges with the customer. The company did not receive support of the venture capital and completely depended on the contribution from a user.

Trillian Pro 1.0 is nominated for Best Internet Communication shareware [9].

On April 26, 2003, the number of the total downloading reached 10 million [10].

Cooperation with block and Gaim in Yahoo!

Trillian Pro 2.0 was released, and, several weeks later, Yahoo! was going to block it not to be able to connect Trillian as "preventive measures to protect a user from a potential spam sender" [11]. The Trillian side released some patches for the evasion and dealt.

The developer of Trillian held out a hand to Gaim of the open source which conflicted which I had the issue of connection with Yahoo! of by support. On March 7, 2004 and June 23, 2004, Yahoo! performed a change to bar the IM client of the third party. The reason is similar before, and this is because it protects a user from a potential spammer [15]. Cerulean Studios released the patch for measures in a few days.

Trillian 3 series

In August, 2004, Cerulean Studios established official blog in order to rebuild the relations with the customer. Trillian 3 was announced with this blog, and the evaluation by very few testers was carried out.

Trillian 3 became the release on December 18, 2004 several months after the beta test. AIM, MSN Messenger, a new video chat in Yahoo! Messenger and sound chat capability, the reinforcement of the log management capability, a function such as the cooperation with Wikipedia are added. The user interface was arranged, too, and the official site was renovated, too.

The free copy which was not updated after 0.74 all the time was updated as Trillian Basic 3. The total downloading number of Trillian Basic reached 20 million in several weeks.

I release Trillian 3.1 on February 23, 2005. Functions such as Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) are added.

U3 and Google Pack

On October 21, 2005, the use from the USB Flash drive of the U3 standard was enabled. Trillian Anywhere always realized portable application by the correction of some files in fact [16]. Trillian Astra for U3 is contributed to a formal forum.

On January 6, 2006, a lot of product Officer, president of Google rally pages announced the Google pack which settled application. Trillian Basic 3.0 was included in that (is not included in a Japanese edition); [17].

Google already ran Google Talk service at that time, and the decision that I included in Trillian and Google pack embarrassed an analyst (the free copy of Trillian cannot be connected to Google Talk). In addition, lists of client choice of Google Talk include Trillian Pro, too [18].

According to the official blog of Cerulean Studios, Trillian was excluded from Google pack on May 19, 2006 [19].

Trillian Astra (Trillian 4)

Announcement of new version "Trillian Astra" was reflected on blog of Cerulean Studios when it passed from release of Trillian 3.1 more than one year. In addition, Astra is a nickname of bird re-Ann of "the Milky Way hitchhike guide". Speedup and a new login screen were planned. On August 14, 2009, Trillian Astra was released.
