Heart of Darkness
"Heart of Darkness" (やみのおく, Heart Of Darkness, 1902 publication) is a British novelist, a masterpiece of Joseph Conrad (Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924 years). The experience that I got in the Congo for the member of lime-juicer era was written for the cause, and this novel which described the dark side of the Western colonialism was announced in 1899. I am elected by "novel best 100 of the 20th century written in English" that Random House, a modern library chose. The title called Heart of Darkness is darkness of the African interior, but it is thought that it connotes human darkness of the mind, darkness of the Europe civilization.

Outline
In at dark of one day, the mer low of the sailor begins to talk about an experience of the youth to friends on board.
After having gone around each country, I came back to London, and the mer low swung, but I thought of going to Africa that I had not yet visited and entered the French trading company in the at second hand of the relative. One of the captains was just murdered by a local person, and this was because a vacancy was able to do it. The mer low departed by ship and arrived at the African branch office more than 30 days. I traded with cotton waste or a glass bead there when a black brought in ivory. In addition, the mer low looked at the slave tied to the chain. While I wait here as 10th, I hear the rumor of the agent of Kurz (Kurtz) which is in the interior [2]. Kurz was the excellent person who sent a large quantity of ivory from the interior and was that it would be to the executive of the company in the future. The mer low departed towards a central branch office of 200 miles ahead with the caravan which arrived and, through the jungle and a grassy plain, a rocky mountain, arrived at the destination on the 15th day.
I heard from the manager of the central branch office that Kurz which there was upstream seemed to be an illness. While a steamship breaks down and spends a day until repair idly, I hear a rumor of Kurz again. Kurz left from the interior for the central branch office carrying ivory, but leave baggage to an assistant, and it is said that only one has come back to the interior by ship halfway. A lonely white figure toward the interior floated to the eyes against instructions of the headquarters alone, and the mer low held interest.
A steamship was finally recovered, and the mer low went back with a manager, servant four ("a pilgrimage"), a local sailor in a river (the Congo). When I approached the place to stay of Kurz, an arrow poured like rain suddenly. A long spear flew to the steersman who fought back, and the steersman who was stabbed in a stomach died of a gun before long.
There was a 25-year-old Russian young man when I arrived at the branch office of the interior. The young man was a worshiper of Kurz. I got that I took a thing, the subordinate that Kurz was thought of like God by a local person and plundered it of ivory out of a young man. The party carried out ill Kurz by a stretcher and picked you up on the ship. Kurz is "The horror! The horror! before long I left the word "[3] and ceased to breathe.
Influence
Thomas Steavns Eliot is one paragraph "The horror! The horror! of "Heart of Darkness" with the first article of poetry "barren land" The Waste Land in エピグラフ I quoted ", but, by advice of Ezra Pound, replaced it with a different sentence. I quote one paragraph of "Mistah Kurtz--he dead." in poetry "vacant people" The Hollow Men.
Influence of "Heart of Darkness" is pointed out in "A Wild Sheep Chase" "1Q84" of Haruki Murakami [4].
Picturization
Orson Welles broadcasts it as a radio drama. In addition, I prepared as a movie first supervision product, but was not able to recruit you financially. (Wells makes "Citizen Kane" and is Hollywood considered to be the heresy it is expected.)
It was made "adaptation" in 1979 by movie director Francis Ford Coppola and was filmized as "the Apocalypse of the hell". But the stage background is changed to the Vietnam War. There is the quotation of "vacant people" of Eliot in this.
The TV drama "Apocalypse of the truth, the hell" of 1994 is the picturization along the original. The supervisor was Nicholas Roeg, and John Malcovich played Tim Roth, Kurz in mer low, and Inman appeared in the part of native woman.
