Aviophobia

Aviophobia

Aviophobia (ひこうききょうふしょう) is a symptom to feel fear for boarding an airplane. One of phobia.

Summary

It is mysterious that a trauma by the news (e.g., the picture which a passenger plane hijacked by the picture of the Japan Airlines flight 123 crash of 1985 and synchronized terrorist attacks case of 2001 in the United States by New York twin towers entered into repeated it and was drained) of the aircraft accident that a dead person went for in the past and the case, the thing that the flight which oneself and the acquaintance got on in the past experiences experience rolled up in some kind of troubles, accidents, and was told, a metal huge object float in the air as for the cause and includes what I cannot understand.

As for the aviophobia, the fear to a crash, the fear to the blind alley, the fear to the high place, fear to die, the uneasiness to going into a panic, a feeling of ineffectualness that could not control the situation, uneasiness to terrorism mingled.

In addition, the probability to meet with the fatal accident with the plane is considered to be a one-2,000,000th (the United States) degree (from 2004 to 2005) from around a one-500,000th (China) with the actual value with statistics, and it may be said that it is relatively security than other death factors (traffic accident except illness and the airplane) (I refer to "an aircraft accident"). The majority of people make a retirement age the crew boarding a plane every day without being in an accident.

But it is thought that it gives a feeling of sentimental resistance to a possible crisis that there is not at all the room where correspondence can deal with for one's intention when it gets on an airplane once to die of high probability when still I meet with an accident by plane (the fatal accident occurs in the case of a car and a railroad, but an accident to be slightly injured, and to finish because it is low speed than an airplane and works over the ground not the sky is higher in the number).

In the case of severeness, I prescribe the drugs such as sleeping drugs with a medical institution and may affect work and life when the movement that I cannot but use the airplane for becomes impossible.

Celebrity of the aviophobia

  • The rasas phone thoria of the movie director often produces the movie which I did on the stage of the United States of America, but there is no that I went out of Europe and performs a location in Sweden finishing it by land route movement instead.
  • Isaac Asimov drove a car by oneself in aerophobes as much as possible and went out [1].
  • Doris Day got a prize from President Bush in 2004, but, because of aviophobia, was not able to attend at an award ceremony [2].
  • A range of the performance activity was limited to the Eastern European countries for a long time, and スビャトスラフ Richter of the former Soviet Union said to be one of the best pianists in the 20th century has not visited Japan until it was to 55 years old. It has the circumstances that former Soviet Union at the time confined activity of Richter except the Eastern European countries to strictly, but is said to be it when Richter was no longer a great aerophobe.
  • John Madden who is a coach, a commentator of the American football moves the very large United States in the camper called the Madden cruiser at every game because of aviophobia. To this Madden cruiser, I painted the face of the MVP called the hose trailer which he chose every week. There is no commentary in all-stars (the Pro Bowl) performed in Hawaii Honolulu not to be able to go by air if there is not it.
  • Dennis Bergkamp of the soccer former Netherlands all-star representative hung long time for extreme aviophobia as possible by land and moved. When representative and position club team played a game in a distant place, I was absent from a game just before that and left earlier and might not be in time for the game just after the expedition. The bell accompaniment was compared with Johan Cruyff called "a flying Dutchman" in the seniors of the Netherlands representative and was made fun with "the Dutchman who did not fly".
  • Even if Suguru Egawa of former professional baseball player needs time in the case of domestic movement so much, I always use railroads. If it was not an airplane, it was said that it was, "an airplane was able to get on Egawa well" from Shigeo Nagashima at the time of the coverage of the event of the excellent ball society held in Hawaii not to be able to go. By the way, a wife of Egawa is a former cabin attendant.
  • Even if Akinobu Mayumi of former professional baseball player needs the movement in the country between long time, I move by land. When I went from Osaka to Niigata of the expedition for the Hanshin supervision era, I changed the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Joetsu Shinkansen by air separately from a team of the movement and moved for five and a half hours. The causes that Mayumi became a great aerophobe include the Japan Airlines flight 123 crash that occurred on August 12, 1985, and it greatly influences Mayumi President Hajimu Nakano baseball team which is a thing and the relative who boarded the JA8119 machine which crashed on the day of the accident outbreak by the flight (Tokyo line Japan Airlines flight 366 from Fukuoka) just before the accident boards the plane navigated as Japan Airlines flight 123 in form to be replaced with Mayumi, and to have been sacrificed.
  • Kazuhiko Ushijima of former professional baseball player is known for aviophobia, too. For for the active play era, the commentator era and the supervision era of Yokohama BayStars, I sometimes use the first Shinkansen and night train and do it and move by land as much as possible.
  • ユリエスキ グリエル of the professional baseball player stopped the participation in expedition for 2 serieses (Okinawa cellular stadium Naha) with Yomiuri Giants by the reason of uneasiness for the airplane movement in the situation that typhoon eighth came close in Okinawa in 2014 on July 7, 2014 when I belonged to Yokohama DeNA BayStars. After being examined at a hospital, aviophobia was diagnosed afterwards [3].
  • Tamori of the comedian speaks that it is saying "it is what or seems lovely when an airplane sees a place flying away when I dislike airplanes, and the airplane is already no use and, you see, goes to the airport and will go to the edge of that runway and, at that time, it is what or feels like I bow my head." [4]. By the way, Tamori is a railroad fan.
  • Sanma Akashiya of the comedian moved to Osaka by 123 flights after collecting of "we jocularity group" (Fuji TV) in Tokyo on the day of the Japan Airlines flight 123 crash that occurred on August 12, 1985 and was going to appear to live program "MBS young people town" (MBS radio) where I performed regularly on in those days. However, cancel 123 flights because collecting of "the jocularity" was over earlier than a plan by chance; before nothing left for Osaka in unloaded freight all day, and got out of trouble. As the saury is at a loss for words during the broadcast of "the young people town"; was shocked, and came to use the Shinkansen not an airplane to the place (including coming and going of Tokyo - Osaka) of the category to be able to go by Shinkansen triggered by this accident.
  • David Bowie of the British rock singer performs the first performance in Japan in 1973, but, in the case of the visit to Japan, I enter Japan at the United States of America of the performance using a ship and use Trans-Siberian Railroad from Vladivostok via Nakhodka route from Yokohama Port when I face it for returning home [5].

Measures

(as for the source mainly English version)

  • It is effective to receive education what an air travel is in reducing fear. It is helpful to understand organization which an airplane flies in and mechanism [6] which a skyliner operates safely in reducing fear to unfamiliarity. In addition, the fear decreases if I know that naturally sounds to operate a sound and vibration, the aileron which put shaking, a wheel in and out when I pass shaking, the cloud of the body with the taking off and landing get up. If there is knowledge, I do not worry about the worst situation and, for what oneself does not know, finish it.
  • It is suggested that I distinguish "risk" (danger) from "sense of fear" (fear). It becomes very sensitive about the risk, and the real risk is not so big even if seized with strong fear. As for the real risk, all Nagoya citizens (approximately 2 million population) do an air travel once a year, and one person dies. As for the annual death toll of Nagoya-shi, there are no people that [7] dies in a plane accident who are approximately 20,000 people in age. A person having almost none of sense of fear for a cancer and myocardial infarction and the stroke strongly has only a sense of fear for the airplane [8]. I can practice measures if I learn fear resisting a cancer and myocardial infarction and a stroke, but it is only unpleasant even if I strongly learn the fear to a crash how much while I get on an airplane and is worthless in increasing survival probability too much. In addition, there are much more death tolls of the automobile accident than the death toll of the plane accident, but, as for sense of fear, there is little one in a car. The Homo sapiens has an instinctive sense of fear for the height (12km) by an evolutionary psychology-like reason, but does not have an instinctive sense of fear for the speed (850km per an hour) and the carcinogenicity (radiation from the space).
  • I understand that the flight is not terrible if a person with aviophobia can see the expression of the captain in a flight deck. In addition, I understand that I am alright even if I meet with normal turbulence. In reality, I cannot see the expression of the captain, but can see the expression of the cabin attendant. On movie "D after tomorrow," this method is recommended. In addition, the small child feels fear in various things based on instinct, but I see the reaction of the parent and take it and do not gradually learn fear.
  • In addition, there is a method to be forgotten for everyday activity, and to forget danger. I do a continuance of the everyday work to think about a destination listening to music to read a book and a magazine seeing the eating movie. In addition, I look the danger of the flight and danger of the everyday life in the face adversely and take measures reasonably, and there is a method to think about what oneself does in left time. Steve Jobs thought about "what do you do today if you would die tomorrow?". Shigeaki Hinohara writes many manuscripts during airplane boarding.
  • In the case of a serious case, I may receive the prescription of the antianxiety drug from a doctor. The Frank Wilhelm and others of the Stanford University medical department state that a benzodiazepine-based antianxiety drug is effective against aviophobia [9].
