Exterior Gateway Protocol

Exterior Gateway Protocol

Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) is one of the routing protocols of the IP network.

Summary

It is communication protocol of Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) performing routing between Autonomous System (AS).

I transcribe it into EGPs for a generic name of EGP and BGP. It was suggested as RFC in 1984 and was used for course control between AS in the late 1980s. I adopted the shortest routing algorithm of the course distance vector type which I controlled. Course convergence was slow, and policy base routing to control a course of the traffic to be called off over the Internet for the intention of the manager of the Autonomous System was impossible. In EGP, it was replaced BGP after the suggestion of BGP rapidly. Therefore I was not used anymore when the 1990s began.

EGP as the generic name

) including IGPs(OSPF,IS-IS,EIGRP pays its attention to "which router should I deliver a packet via to arrive at from here a certain network?" and controls the route. However, it is very difficult to manage the enormous networks such as the current Internet by the control of the router unit in above-mentioned IGPs which can support how much the large-scale network because computational complexity and the database of the routing table become gigantic.

Therefore an idea to divide the Internet into some units, and to manage was devised. This management unit is called an Autonomous System (Autonomous System,AS) and is treated as one network from the outside. I control routing between AS in EGPs whereas IGPs performs routing in this AS. In other words, I control the subject and the route which did it whether it is "which network do you transfer a packet to to go to a certain network from here?". [1]

EGP was used until the mid-1980s, but BGP is used mainly now.
