General statement

エランギス is an epiphytic orchid distributed led by Africa, Madagascar and shares touching the flower with the white, long spur in single axiality, the angraecum genus including there being many things giving off the fragrance that night, is good and many characteristics. The distinction depends on the forms and essence of structure and the labial palp of the marrow pillar tip. For example, the labial palp is wide in the angraecum, and the base comes to hold a marrow pillar, but the labial palp does not change with side petals so much in エランギス. As for the pollinium, two lead to another pattern in the angraecum, but a pattern is gathered up in one in エランギス.

The origin of the scientific name put aer (air) and angos (pipe) of the Greek together, and Tsuchihashi estimates that it comes from a long spur [¹].

Characteristic

A perennation aerophyte [²] of the evergreen nature. Stems are usually short and it grows thick and the lower part produces a root and adheres a leaf. The tip break the leaf with quality of leather in the form that the tip including an obovoid form and the inverse lancet arch is slightly wide small, and it is to the size that both sides are unequal.

The flower stalk goes out of the leaf side and brings a tuft or the flower which independent, is white, and the flower stalk is apt to become zigzag. White is the center, and the flower has pink and a transparent thing in a spur, and there is the thing tinged with yellowishness again. The marrow pillar is white, but there is the red thing. I save honey in a long spur, and it is said that the orchid giving off a strong fragrance chooses a nocturnal moth as a pollinator, and this kind is thought so about [³].

Distribution and biotope

I am distributed over Madagascar from the African Continent. I grow it in a river basin and the forest, the savanna. I adhere it on the tree, but there is the thing which rarely appears on the rock [⁴].

Classification

Approximately 50 kinds are known [⁵].

Use

They are cultivated as 洋 run, but the angraecums do not spread. The abbreviated designation is Aergs. It is approximately 20 kinds to be introduced into Japan [⁶]. The mating kinds are created, too. That the cultivation demands the aerial humidity more although being approximately similar to an angraecum [⁷].
