Summary
There is Mts. Minami-Alps along the West Coast, and Mount Cook (3,754m) is the highest peak.
In the map of the 19th century, there was the map considered to be middle island (Middle Island) and Newall star (New Ulster), and the southern island (South Island) meant current Stewart Island.
The southern island is often called "Mainland" (the mainland). It is the area that is bigger as a reason than Kitajima, but, as another reason, comes from the legend of the Maori. As for the population, most, three-fourths, approximately 3 million people of the population of New Zealand live in Kitajima toward Kitajima.
There is the person who thinks about a southern island in one (inhabitants of the Oakland area in particular) of inhabitants of Kitajima as if it is one town. I may express the event that happened in a southern island with "falling south" (in the south) without pinpointing a city and the town.
