A multi-function display (Multi Function Display, multifunctional display) is the display machine part which can display data of the having many kinds like the navigation system of the car, and various functions are changed with a button. MFD was used by warplane first and spread for a commercial airplane, car use afterwards. The thing put on fighters is called the head down display.

In many cases, I am used in total, and MFD constitutes glass cockpit with a primary flight display (PFD).

Because I can display plural data like the said article as an advantage of MFD, it may be said that I do not consume much space to a cockpit in comparison with an analog display. For example, the cockpit of the RAH-66 Comanche does not have an analog apparatus at all, and all information is displayed by MFD. In addition, much MFD can display navigation route, movement map, airport information, weather radar, NEXRAD, GPWS, all the TCAS on the same screen, and they help the pilot.

A CRT display was used as indication machine parts in the early days, but in late years becomes the liquid crystal display. In addition, a button may be placed in screen in itself by adoption of the touch panel.

First MFD was introduced by an American air force from the late 1960s to the 1970s. The early example is F-111D. The United States adopted this technique to a civilian airplane not to mention the fighters such as an F-15 or the F-16 afterwards. Russia fell in this field, but takes it in in the improved model of Su-27 and the MiG-29.

A space shuttle adopted it in the field of space. The cockpit of the space shuttle used an analog apparatus in the early days, but MFD was added by improvement carried out from 1998. The Atlantis that I repaired enforced STS-101 which became the first mission using the glass cockpit afterwards.

In addition, in the field of car, introduction is begun at the latter half of 1990s mainly on a luxury model, and things letting you display the number of the trip meter odometer and the AT gear steps, driving support information such as various warning increase, and the thing which unification can operate appears a lot to an air-conditioner or the audio system with a display for the car navigation.
