Imperial Palace front gate iron bridge (Niju-bashi Bridge). It is Fushimi oar to be seen to the right.

Niju-bashi Bridge (にじゅうばし) is a popular name of the bridges in the Imperial Palace of Chiyoda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. In a road toward the Chowaden Palace from the Imperial Palace front gate, it is an iron bridge appearing in the Niju-bashi Bridge moat exactly, and the original name is front gate iron bridge (せいもんてつばし). But is used as front gate iron bridge and a generic name of two of the front gate stone bridge [1]; [2].

A ceremonial arms corps of the Imperial Palace guards official of the Imperial Guards falls in the front gate, and commoners cannot usually cross Niju-bashi Bridge. But I can cross the iron bridge when I file beforehand and visit the Imperial Palace. In addition, the front gate is opened at the time of the Imperial Palace public congratulatory visit of the New Year and the Emperor's Birthday and can pass without permission.

History

Origin of misconception and "Niju-bashi Bridge" of the bridge

Front gate stone bridge. When it is Niju-bashi Bridge, I may be mistaken, but the front gate iron bridge in the depths of this stone bridge is "Niju-bashi Bridge".
Early west Marudai hand bridge (ferry Che ベアト photography), west circle Ote-mon Gate (passage under a turret) of the left edge exist in the Meiji era, but there is not the Korai gate of this side now. It seeming subtly the rear of the west Marudai hand bridge a west circle prohibition against entering the sacred precincts in a vehicle or on horseback bridge (position of existing Niju-bashi Bridge).

The front gate (western citadel of the castle Ote-mon Gate of Edo-jo Castle) of the Imperial Palace is usually closed, and an enthronement Grand Ceremony of Accession, the Emperor, the empress of the Emperor, the large funeral service of the Empress Dowager are not used other than the verge of the state guest visit at time with the special event. There are two bridges called back "front gate iron bridge" made with "front gate stone bridge" of this side made with a stone seeing from Imperial Palace Plaza side at the entrance of the Imperial Palace and iron. The position relations from the outside iron bridge → gate built between the main gate and the main house of the palace-styled architecture in the Fujiwara period → palace east garden (will trace the route called Aramiya former open space )→ palace (Chowaden Palace [3]).in Imperial Palace Plaza → stone bridge → front gate → front gate out of the front gate In other words, there is the iron bridge inside of the gate and had the Niju-bashi Bridge case (accident) in the all stone bridge, and is Niju-bashi Bridge as the generic name to mention it later and is not the thing which I had in Niju-bashi Bridge in the close meaning.

Two bridges were rebuilt on the occasion of Imperial Palace building (Meiji Palace) from to Meiji 17 through 22.

There is the back iron bridge at the position where there was ever the west circle prohibition against entering the sacred precincts in a vehicle or on horseback bridge of Edo-jo Castle. Because it was dual structure built over two steps of top and bottom that the prohibition against entering the sacred precincts in a vehicle or on horseback bridge (another name, viewing the moon bridge [4]) handed a bridge girder with wooden construction Bridge with the railing of the knob of a bridge post made of bronze on the way because a trench was deep and built a bridge over the top, I came to be called "Niju-bashi Bridge". The current iron bridge was rebuilt in (1964) in 1964, and the bridge girder is not double, but a popular name in front is just used. There is the stone bridge of this side at the position where there was a west Marudai hand bridge of Edo-jo Castle, and the current stone bridge is building of (1887) in 1887. Because it is double arched structure, I say Megane-bashi Bridge by a common name and am often mistaken saying "this stone bridge is Niju-bashi Bridge", but am a mistake. The major bridge was a wooden bridge such as the photographs, and the material was not an arched bridge.

"Niju-bashi Bridge" is the name of the back front gate iron bridge definitely [5]; save; because "is a stone bridge of this side and a bridge that a back iron bridge is piled up in the same moat two and appears, Niju-bashi Bridge (seem to do 重架) is not correct interpretation, but generally Niju-bashi Bridge and a generic name to do are used in addition, and "two Bridge, one of the Miyagi front gate fold a stone, and, as for two, a lot of things using the photograph of the front gate stone bridge make two of the iron bridge in front gate outside stone bridge and the front gate with iron in a prewar book in Niju-bashi Bridge"…It has been got close to "[6]. In addition, Imperial Palace Plaza was called the Nijubashimae open space likewise.

In the first place the name Niju-bashi Bridge is only the common name which has been used generally not an official thing. It is written down to the official daily gazette Imperial Court low-grade official in charge of banquet services in 1940 and it is said under an alias now, but explains two that I am used as a generic name of two Bridge while doing it when "Niju-bashi Bridge" lets you do front gate iron bridge in Imperial Household Agency or Ministry of the Environment.
