I point to the thing that resolution used in analog color television broadcast is near for resolution of the current digital television broadcasting mainly with SDTV (Standard definition television, standard resolution TV).

General statement
Only 480i/p is used basically in Japan [1]. After a start of the digital broadcasting (ISDB, DVB, ATSC), I came to be used to distinguish it from HDTV.
When I greatly classify resolution, I am used, and it is sequentially in LDTV - SDTV - HDTV - UHDTV from low one.
I am compressed in MPEG-2 and H.264 and am often used basically. Part of resolution is different from the digital serial component picture of the non-compression, and non-compression is higher-resolution.
The horizontal resolution largely improves SDTV from approximately 330 of them to 500 of them than NTSC analog television broadcast, but a picture may not be the top depending on a bit rate that SDTV is compressed basically and is used.
Because it was the TV method of 525 scanning lines such as the NTSC in Japan, United States, Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, I use 480i/p well. On the other hand, I use 576i/p well because it was PAL, the TV method of 625 scanning lines of SECAM in Europe, China, Russia.

Resolution, the one segment that are lower than this are not included in SDTV. There is not the broadcast of 4:3 in 480p in Japan. The resolution used on DVD is about the same.
in the United States
It is SDTV, and 480p and 576p of the progressive scanning are EDTV, but the EDTV is not used in the digital very much in Japan and is classified in SDTV. However, association of U.S. household appliance assumes 480p/576p EDTV in the United States without including it in SDTV [2].

Multi-formation
When I do not perform HDTV broadcast in ISDB-T, I can perform the broadcast to 3 channels in SDTV. In addition, the broadcast of 2 channels of HDTV and SDTV is performed, and even the ground wave with a few segments is used by extension of the sports broadcast by the progress of the encoding technology.
