The Qatari national flag is divided in a vertical zigzag line with nine tops at aspect ratio 11:28 by white and chestnut brown (Marron). The length of the only long side exceeds twice the narrow side in the current independent countries (I refer to the list of national flags), and, as a result, it is the oblong national flag.
The meanings of the national flag are as follows [1].
- The color that the white means peace globally
- Color of the blood which Qatar was past as for the chestnut brown (in the late 19th century in particular) and drained in war
- In the notched line with nine tops, Qatar symbolizes that it was in the ninth emirate which entered the protection of the U.K. by Qatar U.K. treaty of 1916 in Persian Gulf bank
A zigzag line is omitted and may be expressed by a straight line. I resemble the Bahraini national flag, but, in the case of Bahrain, the aspect ratio of the national flag is 3:5 with red not chestnut brown, too.
History
The emirates of the Persian Gulf bank used the flag all in red as a national flag until the mid-19th century, but the flag of which country was the same and held a problem not to be identified. When Qatar concluded a treaty with the U.K. in 1868, it is said that it was the national flag which put white and red together from previous red as for the color of the Qatari flag [1]. A national flag did not have the clear rule at first and was not decided when the line between white and the red was straight and was notched.
Originally the part of the chestnut brown was red, but was changed to the current color in 1936. When there are various opinions in the reason, and a national flag raised other than the opinion distinguishing with the Bahraini national flag fades in chestnut brown by strong sunlight of the sun and changes a national flag, there is the opinion which was "not to have weak this color that faded" [1].
