Career

In New York City Brooklyn ward, I was born between mother of father and the Roman Catholicism church which were a Jew. Twin brothers win Jerome ウィトキン [1] of the realism painter. However, the parents got a divorce when ウィトキン was young without surpassing a religious difference. ウィトキン is St. of Brooklyn I graduated from Cecelia's grammar school, Grover Cleveland High School and, during Vietnam War period from 1961 through 1964, worked as a battlefield photographer. In 1967, I became a photographer of the freelance and then became the formal photographer of City Walls Inc. I entered Cooper Union (Cooper Union) of New York and learned a sculpture and acquired a bachelor's degree (Bachelor of Arts) afterwards in 1974. I learned from University of New Mexico (University of New Mexico) of Albuquerque with a scholarship from Columbia University and became an art master (Master of Fine Arts) there.

Influence and theme

ウィトキン tells that the imagination and the sensitivity of the self were influenced by the neck of the girl having seen what was cut in the traffic accident that took place in a childhood in front of a house.

When mother went down the stairs of the house with twin brothers with me on the morning of Sunday, it happened. We were going to go to the church. In the place where I quitted half of the entrances of the building, I heard an intense crash sound and scream, a cry for the help. Three cars, car which all family got into were rolled up in an accident. With confusion, I stayed away from mother all too soon. It rose in the curbside, and it was seen that I fell down, and something appeared from the one of the overturned cars. Curbside was not able to move me with standing straight. It was a neck of the young girl. To talk what which I stoop down, and was going to speak to the face it is……But somebody separated me before I touched it. [2]

Furthermore, ウィトキン tells that the trouble of the family influenced one's work.

The favorite painter of ウィトキン is Giotto, but it is apparent to the thing affecting the work most to be surrealism (Max Ernst in particular) and baroque art. I learn from early daguerreotype and a work of E J ベロック (E. J. Bellocq) about the photography technique.

As for the work of ウィトキン, "the body" (the or part) sells the themes such as "various outsiders including dwarfism, a sex change, hermaphroditism, the physical person with a disability" "death". Because of the トランスグレッシブ art (Transgressive art)-like property of the photograph, as for the work of ウィトキン, the brand called the exploitation was pushed, and it sometimes gave public opinion a shock (Shock value) that an inverted living picture of ウィトキン often reminded of the religious episode of the famous classic picture. The art of ウィトキン was often ignored by the society because it was provocative.

ウィトキン uses the high intuitive approach for a physical process of the photograph production and damages a negative film in that, and bleaching or a color converts a print, and enameling technique to put a hand in a medicine is included. This experiment was begun after I saw an ambrotype photograph (Ambrotype.with the collodium wet plate photograph) in a certain woman and 19th century when former lover damaged by a frame came out.
