Red tongue
The Japanese ghost that the red tongue (I revealed it) is drawn in "illustrated map crime wave first part style" (Sekien Toriyama, the Edo era). The figure such as the covered beast is described in a black cloud, but, on the water gate, as for the whole body image, it is unknown having the hand with the nail and a hairy face. The open tongue has a big tongue.

Origin theory
Because explanations are not attached by "an illustrated map crime wave", the details are unclear. The name is suggested by relations with (しゃくぜつにち) in a red tongue God (しゃくぜつじん), day of dark omen to protect a west gate of the Jupiter (Jupiter) preached in Yin Yang method in the early modern times by literary person, Atsunobu Inada [1].
Even picture scroll "crime wave picture scroll" (尾田郷澄, 1832) is the name "red tongue" (National Diet Library possession), and pictorial parcheesi "ten realms of living beings sugoroku" of the Edo era needs a drawn ghost. It is described in the pattern different from a pattern, the thing of the stone swallow near "an unlucky day" to mention it later each, and there is not the description of the water gate, too.
About "a water gate" being drawn on the picture of "the illustrated map crime wave" by Sekien Toriyama, I advocate an opinion that ghost student, Katsumi Tada, ghost sight-seeing house, Kenji Murakami are a kind of explanation by a picture due to the stone swallow. Because "the red" is common to "淦" (water collecting in the bottom of a ship dirt) and "dirt", according to it, perform a metaphor of a dirt; "the tongue" of "bottom" (mean the depths of the heart) and the proverb because "the tongue knows gate ("the cause and agreement of the mouth evil") of the evil", the red tongue is a kind of fiends and cannibals God, and do it when is the picture which meant an underprivileged thing in felicity as far as a mouth opens [2].
Unlucky day
"It is full of monsters" (painter, the production year ignorance, Rei Kagaya possession), and, ghost picture scroll "100 mysterious figure winding" (Sushi Sawaki, 1737) of the Edo era, a ghost called (dirt dies a dirt mouth) is described in "monster picture scroll" (painter, the production year ignorance, Kawasaki-shi citizen museum possession) in "an unlucky day" to be thought to be the model of "the red tongue" which I drew of the stone swallow. The figure such as the covered beast is greatly described in an open red mouth (the tongue is included), the hand with the nail and hairy face, black clouds and is almost common with "the red tongue" of "ten realms of living beings sugoroku" and the stone swallow. The water gate is not drawn [3].
I can confirm the name "unlucky day" in one of a ghost said to that it was described in "the monster painting" which old second highest rank among Buddhist priests Motonobu attracted by essay "嬉遊笑覧" of the Edo era described [3].
About "an unlucky day," Katsumi Tada advocates an opinion that an unlucky day of the six kinds of day may be an origin [3].
Commentary of the Showa period
When a red tongue is placed, in a book after the Showa era, some unusual commentaries occur, but I am considered direct, not to be related all with the thing of a picture scroll and the stone swallow except a pattern. I write below down the outline.
Explanatory notes of Morihiko Fujisawa
To the picture of "the red tongue" of the stone swallow that folklorist, Morihiko Fujisawa placed it as a cut in 編書 "complete series of ghost image story day main volume" (1929)
I open りて Sekiguchi in anything else or a solstice and am master of that of evil deed mysterious こそ 赤舌 cruising in the field
I attach the caption of contents to cruise in と, the field of the bad person [4]. There is not this caption with the thing with a stone swallow and old documents and is the commentary due to the hand of Fujisawa referred for a picture.
Commentary of Arifumi Sato
A ghost illustrated book "ghost size illustrated book" by Arifumi Sato ([5] [6] that a commentary that is the ghost who lengthen a tongue by) from the bright red sunset sky in )・" ghost size all courses (1980 in 1973, and kidnaps a human being is placed. The human house which appeared carried off by a red tongue wants to prosper afterwards, and [5] is written down, too, but is not confirmed to be the tradition with a stone swallow and Old documents.
Trip of the Tohoku ghost story
The talk that a red tongue appears in the farm village of Aomori Tsugaru in Norio Yamada "trip (1974) of the northeastern ghost story", and solved the irrigation dispute of the field is placed. The talk that a red tongue went to the Tsugaru district for is used for the commentaries such as the books which featured the theme of a ghost illustrated book and a ghost after the Showa widely, and they do this story with authority.
When "the red tongue" of the stone swallow was attached to the tradition that the irrigation dispute that there was in the field was solved, the story that a red tongue solved an irrigation dispute is understood [2].
