Summary

I grow towards a southeastern direction from the neighborhood at the south end of Manhattan Island and am located to equal Manhattan bridge. I appear on the yeast river and link Dumbo / Brooklyn Heights (en) of Brooklyn to Civic Center of ロウアー Manhattan. As for the length, 1,834m, the central span are 486m.

The name of the cause cause was called "the New York = Brooklyn Bridge" and "a yeast river bridge", but it was the current name formally in 1915. It is one of the suspension bridges which are the oldest in the United States and is the world's first suspension bridge using the wire of the steel at the same time. I took time of 14 years and was completed in 1883 and was completed. I was inaugurated on May 24, the same year, and the person of 150,000 crossed this bridge on the first day of the opening to traffic. It was the world's longest suspension bridge until Williamsburg Bridge of upper reaches was done in 1903. It was enrolled in a civil engineering history building to United States of America Kunisada history building in [6], 1972 in 1964 [8].

This bridge is divided into two levels, and the upper air can cross a person and a bicycle on foot now. The lower layer is a road of the one side 3 traffic lane. The Brooklyn Bridge is combined with the Gothic design and becomes one of the tourist attraction of New York and can see people running well on a bridge on a holiday.

In addition, as for the order of three suspension bridges working in a yeast lower part of a river style from Manhattan, there are BMW (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg) and a method memorizing from the down stream (the south).

History

John オーグスタス Roebling

"The Statue of Liberty" during construction for scenery guidance of Hashigami

The Brooklyn Bridge was designed first by John オーグスタス Roebling (by John Augustus Roebling, 1806 through 1869, the German pronunciation ヨーハン August Raabe ring (Johann August Rӧbling)) of the German emigrant from テューリンゲン state ミュルハウゼン which graduated from the bridge engineering of the Berlin royal high school of science and engineering (existing Berlin University department of science and engineering civil engineering department), but he died of an illness for tetanus without waiting for the construction start of the bridge. Washington Roebling (1837 through 1926) of the son embedded with the Civil War succeeded construction, but, wow, Ren Roebling (1843 through 1903) studied in engineering, and Emily of the same wife affiliated with Germany measured mutual understanding with on-site director and him afterwards because he was also paralyzed at a lower part of the body by a caisson disease. It is said that I watched the construction of the bridge with a telescope from the home until I die at 89 years old in 1926 even after Washington loses it in wives in 1903. At the time of construction, the caisson disease has not been yet understood well.

When I designed the bridge, Roebling designed 6 times than the strength that it was thought that it was necessary in those days firmly. It is pointed out that the reason why this bridge sustained itself until today is that there was some such good luck whereas a wind tunnel experiment has not been yet conducted in those days when a bridge was built, and the most of the bridge built for the same period were discarded (it suffers from octopus Mana Rose Bridge having collapsed by wind a reason that many bridges were discarded).

It caused the dead person due to a large number of caisson diseases on the occasion of construction.

Access

City hall Station gets off the Manhattan side in New York City subway Broadway line (N R Q W), Lexington avenue line (4 5 6). I see the bridge immediately from city hall park Station. High street - Brooklyn Bridge Station of the eighth Avenue line (A C) of the subway gets off the Brooklyn side if I pass. It is attention in one passing from this side being predominantly scenic, but an entrance being hard to find. In the past, there was the choice called the train.

In addition, a bicycle often runs at a violent speed in the passage for the walker. When I cross the bridge in the bad night of the prospect in particular, attention is necessary.
