Cycasin

Cycasin

Structure of the cycasin. In addition, ether-binding last (top right corner part of the figure) azoxy methane is connected.

Cycasin (English, Cycasin) is one of the chemical substances (glucoside) included in the plant. As for the composition type, C8H16N2, the molecular weight are approximately 252. I am known as poison included in a seed of the cycad in particular at high density.

Summary

The cycasin is included in cycad (zamia department such as cycad and zamia プミラ (English version)). I can take edible starch called the sago out of these plants. However, processing to remove cycasin is necessary that it is known by the cycasin that it becomes bad for Homo sapiens and to be edible and do the starch which therefore I gathered from these plants. For a treatment method, there is a method to expose to water using most of the starches not dissolving in water or a method to expose it to light of the sun, and to aim at the resolution by ultraviolet rays whereas the cycasin is solution.

When Homo sapiens eats cycasin, the cycasin is hydrolyzed by a bacterial lasting β-glucosidase living in gastrointestinal tract, and glucose is cut, and methyl azoxy methanol is isolated. They have the methyl azoxy methanol in itself toxicity, but formaldehyde and the diazomethane which are metabolized, and were made have the toxicity.

The cycasin is known to have hepatotoxic (English version) for Homo sapiens. In addition, the carcinogenicity for the Homo sapiens is doubted, too, and the international cancer research organization classifies cycasin in group 2B [explanatory note 1]. In addition, it is known that a fatal neurologic symptom may appear under the influence of cycasin when a cow eats a leaf or a seed of the cycad.

In addition, UDP - glucose and methyl azoxy methanol acetate (English version) become UDP and the cycasin by a catalyst of en:Methy-ONN-azoxymethanol bata-D-glucosyltransferase [1].

Explanatory note

  1. "Group 2B" by the ^ international cancer research organization is the group where things suspected of the carcinogenicity are classified in. Evidence indicating the carcinogenicity to Homo sapiens is limited, and, as for the evidence that even animal experiment is still enough for, the thing which does not gather is classified again.
