VESA BIOS Extensions
VESA BIOS Extensions (VBE) is an interface to set the number of the resolution and the colors of the video card from the software side standardized by VESA, and 3.0 established in 1998 is the latest.
This expanded the traditional int10h BIOS call, and is used through BIOS equipped with by a video card. This BIOS supports resolution of 320x200,640x400,640x480,800x600,1024x768,1280x1024 and a change of the number of the colors of 4,8,16,24(32)bpp, the access mode of the frame buffer and the designation of the address, setting of RAMDAC.
However, VBE of the old version guarantees only movement by the real mode and cannot perform the setting about the refresh rate again. Therefore the driver for exclusive use of each board which did not go by way of VBE with impossibility developed that I used it without bearing a penalty for a performance, and I was provided by Windows9x or XFree86 which worked in protect mode.
Because this limit disappears from VBE 3.0, and the adapter compatible with non-VGA is supported, in XFree86 4.x, many video cards become able to work with an SVGA server.
