MacPorts (マックポーツ) is one of macOS and the package systems of administration to simplify introduction of the software in the Darwin OS. I was called DarwinPorts before [1]. MacPorts is free / open-source software project to simplify introduction of other free / open-source software. Aiming at a purpose and a function like the Ports collection of Fink and the BSD, DarwinPorts started as some OpenDarwin projects in 2002. Landon Fuller, Kevin Van Vechten, most of employees of the apple including the Jordan Hubbard squash participated, too.
I can introduce many packages by inputting a sudo port install package name and a command in a terminal in MacPorts. When there is the binary that has been compiled of the appointed package, I download MacPorts and perform a compilation and installation when there is not it. The package in the dependence is installed automatically, too. I can update the installed package by a command called sudo port selfupdate [2].
On April 28, 2005, the project released version 1.0 of MacPorts [3].
In December, 2005, the project exceeded 3000 ports which was a milestone [4]. In August, 2010, MacPorts version 1.9.1 exceeded 7000 ports. As of August, 2011, MacPorts version 2.0.1 has a port more than 8300.
In MacPorts, it is worked as a host now in Mac OS Forge (for the third party project that is not supported by an apple an apple making and open source hosting service managing).
The official MacPorts GUI application was called Pallet and began in 2009 as Google Summer of Code [5].
