The seal (USS Seal, SS-183) is a submarine of U.S. Navy. One ship of the salmon grade submarine. The name of a warship was named for the seal which was an old name of the generic name of the animal of the seal department (True seal) and the reed Culicidae. Most of reed Culicidae are replaced by Sea lion of the new word, and a fur seal stays in Seal exceptionally. For a warship with the name the second ship.

Warship career

The seal started work in electric boat company of Connecticut Groton on May 25, 1936. I name it it by Mrs. John F green Slade on April 25, 1937 and am launched, and a conduct bottom of the Major captain curl G Hansel is placed on duty on April 30, 1938.

It left New England in late November, and, following the adjustment after an expansion stroke of a rowing crew cruise in the Caribbean Sea and the stroke of a rowing crew, the seal moved to Panama Canal Zone and left for the strategy activity in the here solo of the home port. I arrived on December 3 and engaged in balboa of Panama and the activity at the here solo coast until January, 1939 and I moved to Haiti afterwards and participated in practice "20th Fried problem" (English version) after having trained you at the appointed hour. The practice was performed in small Antilles Islands in late February to examine the ability of the fleet which controlled approach to Central America and South America.

I come back to the Haiti Cuba sea area, and, in March, the seal practices it with the fourth destroyer fleet. I received overhaul in New London in April, and the improvement of the main plane was carried out. The seal sailed again for the south in June and went to California San Diego, Pearl Harbor passing through Panama Canal. I engaged in the depth survey by Hydrographic Department in Hawaii from July through September and participated in various practice at the coast. I return to San Diego of the home port in September.

The seal engaged in practice for 2 that lasted and was in charge of the support of the aviation corps of water war vessel, the navy and the army and was active in the West Coast and a Hawaiian sea area. The 21st silent service to belong to in autumn of 1941 becomes the transfer of a census register to an Asian fleet (English version). It left Pearl Harbor under the conduct of the Kenneth C hardware major (Annapolis 1925 tuple) on October 24 and arrived at Manila on November 10.

It is first and it for second patrol from December, 1941 to April, 1942

On December 14 that did not pass from Pearl Harbor attack for one week either, the seal went to the coast of Luzon by the first patrol. The seal hurries to the north to meet a Japanese military authorities corps toward a bicancer and the reinforcement of the landing party of アパリ (English version). I go at first off ボヘアドール cape Lighthouse (English version) and change the course to the south of bicancer afterwards on December 20. On December 23, the seal attacked and sank 陸軍船早隆丸 (Awa country Kyodo Kisen, 835 tons) at 17°35'N 120°12'E / 17.583 degrees N 120.200 degrees E / 17.583, a point [3] of 120.200. 早隆丸 was Japanner sunk in December, 1941 by the last U.S. forces. The seal moves to the Gulf of リンガエン entrance from the bicancer sea area and January, 1942 begins and patrols again at Gulf of Ramon (English version) entrance via movement, the Luzon north end to the north. I went around the ボヘアドール cape on January 9 and passed エンガノ cape (English version) on 10th and took the course to the Moluccas straits south on 11th. I engage in the destruction of the enemy traffic line in a Celebes east bank part on January 20. On January 27, I patrolled in the Ken Dali offing where the Japanese military struck on 24th three days ago. The seal was directed to enter the Netherlands naval base of Surabaya. On February 5, the seal finished a 53-day action and did 帰投 in Surabaya.

By an air raid of the day after day in Surabaya, the seal repeated a submarine voyage almost every day. While I repeated a submarine voyage and surfacing, the engine of the seal became covered with dust, and the condition of the prism of the periscope became funny again. However, to repair it; an air raid; disturbed. On February 11, the seal sets sail for チラチャップ (English version) of the Java southern coast part for movement. I arrived on February 14 and came alongside submarine Holland (USS Holland, AS-3). The Japanese military attacks Bali each more in Sumatra on February 19 on a day same as a seal having entered port in チラチャップ. The Allied Forces fleet was at war with the Japanese fleet of the Bali area, and the air force tried a counterattack in the Japanese fleet.

On February 19, the seal went to the Java Sea area by the second patrol. Via Lombok Strait, I discover two transportation fleets on February 24. It was judged to have overthrown one cargo boat by the attack for the fleet [4]. On 25th, the following day, the seal detects a sound source at 06°42'S 117°20'E / 6.700 degrees S 117.333 degrees E / -6.700, a point of 117.333 [5]. Although I discovered a fleet soon and tried an attack, the course was changed frequently and failed [6]. I perform a long chase for a Japanese fleet after having fought by Surabaya offing sea fight on February 28. I discovered a Natori type light cruiser and two destroyers [7] and discovered it again after entering at night though I lost sight once after a date changed on March 1 and I fired two torpedoes for four, a destroyer for "a Natori type", but only disappointed it without hitting it [8]. The seal moved to the Makassar south after March 14 and continued patrolling. However, I was patrolling between Makassar and デ Bril banks on March 21, and the apparatus of the air system broke down, and cooling means became unusable. It was judged that the tinker was impossible, and the seal fell down to the south. On April 9, the seal finished a 48-day action and did 帰投 to Freemantle.

The third, the fourth patrol from May, 1942 to October

On May 12, the seal went to the South China Sea by the third patrol. Pulled the Celebes Sea and the Sulu Sea and advanced for a patrol sea area of the Malay Peninsula sea near the shore. On the early morning of May 28, the seal was in the South China Sea and fired it for army ship dragon Fukumaru (dragon horse steamship, 1,946 tons) at 07°33'N 116°22'E / 7.550 degrees N 116.367 degrees E / 7.550, a point of 116.367 at the night and damaged it. Furthermore, I fired a torpedo for twice, but did not hit it [9]. Dragon Fukumaru sank by the falling of a thunderbolt of the sister ship swordfish (USS Swordfish, SS-193) which rushed to [10]; [explanatory note 1]. Although attacked the 409th fleet consisting of seven off 11°35'N 109°18'E / 11.583 degrees N 109.300 degrees E / 11.583, Gulf of Cam Ranh of 109.300 on June 7, by the control of the specially installed gunboat China-maru (Eastern Asia marine transportation, 2,103 tons) and plane of the escort ship, was forced in 深深度潜航 for seven hours [11]; [12]. I was troubled from June 15 to 17th by stormy weather. I discovered a puncture to June 18 and withdrew in a patrol sea area on June 19. The seal passed through the rose tapir straits and passed Makassar Strait on June 23. On July 4, the seal finished a 53-day action and did 帰投 to Freemantle.

On August 10, the seal went to the Indochina area by the fourth patrol. Patrol in Cape para-Dan and to the north, and is 11°25'N 109°05'E / 11.417 degrees N 109.083 degrees E / 11.417, a point of 109.083 on September 3; cargo-passenger boat magic jewel which makes the tide go out when it is thrown into the sea round (Osaka merchant ship, 7,266 tons) overthrowing [10] [13] [explanatory note 2]. The magic jewel which makes the tide go out when it is thrown into the sea-maru ran aground in the shallows to prevent sinking [13]. However, I was troubled other than it by the disorder of the torpedoes such as early explosions and an oil leak, the puncture from a warship and was not able to raise military gains as expected. On October 2, the seal finished a 53-day action and did 帰投 to Freemantle.

I it for the fifth patrol from October, 1942 to November

On October 24, the seal went to the Palauan area by the fifth patrol. Although I discovered a cargo boat and a tanker on November 15, distance was too far and gave up the attack. On 16th, the following day, the seal discovered five transportation fleets where I touched two escort ships in 06°16'N 135°19'E / 6.267 degrees N 135.317 degrees E / 6.267, a Palauan southeastern sea area of 135.317 and fired a torpedo for army ship ぼすとん circle (Ishihara Sangyo marine transportation, 5,477 tons). Several seconds later, as for the seal, it was collided, and I was shaken intensely, and illumination disappeared. The seal subsided to depth of 76 meters. Meanwhile, it hit the torpedo はぼすとん-maru which shot of the seal and attacked and sank this. When the seal surfaced and investigated it four hours later, each of the two periscopes was broken off, and the radar was destroyed together with a prop, too. Pieces were scattered in the cigarette deck of the bridge deck rear. It was thought that this was made when Japanner broke off the periscope of the seal and was described as saying "I brought a good sample of the paint of the Japanner". The fate of the ship in collision with a seal was not sure, but it was concluded that I could make a hole by a collision. I gave notice of that the seal broke off patrol for the headquarters on November 17 and went to Pearl Harbor. On November 30, the seal finishes a 37-day action; and is 帰投 in Pearl Harbor. I was performed a cruise for overhaul after temporary repair by the メア island navy shipyard. After work, I came back to Pearl Harbor on April 2, 1943. During overhaul, the captain took place of Harry B dodging major (Annapolis 1930 tuple).

There was one discovery by this patrol of the seal. Conventionally, the submarine which patrolled in the Palauan neighborhood was located near マラカラル channel of the atoll southeast, but did not readily include military gains. The seal was located in another channel with a Seawolf (USS Seawolf, SS-197) and investigated the comings and goings situation of the vessels. As a result, the Japanese side understood that I used toe gel ムルンギ water supply (Palauan west water supply) in northwestern north mainly. After that the submarine patrolling by vessels going in and out of Palau will be located in the toe gel ムルンギ water supply area [14].

I it for sixth, the seventh patrol from April, 1943 to July

On April 14, the seal went to the Palauan area by the sixth patrol. I arrived at the patrol sea area of the Palauan sea near the shore after a call at a port in the Midway Island by May 1 on April 18. I discovered a cargo boat on the west of Palau, and, on May 2, the seal did the falling of a thunderbolt, but I failed and received the control of the plane adversely. On May 4 two days later, the seal discovered the transportation fleet which left for Palau in Rabaul in 06°50'N 134°30'E / 6.833 degrees N 134.500 degrees E / 6.833, the アンガウル island sea near the shore of 134.500 and attacked and sank special tanker さんくれめんて circle (Mitsubishi Corporation, 7,354 tons). However, I was not endowed with a take other than it. On June 3, the seal finishes a 50-day action; and is 帰投 in the Midway Island. I trained you with repair for next patrol for two weeks.

On June 24, the seal went to the Japanese sea near the shore by the seventh patrol. On July 2, the seal arrives at the patrol sea area of 魹 ヶ 崎近海. It did not hit it though I discovered three cargo boats on July 5 three days later and fired a torpedo [15]. On July 8, the seal discovered a transportation fleet and fired three torpedoes. However, the seal produced an oil leak again then. 0 sets of water observation machine of the sky caution discovered the oil crest which flowed out of a seal and a first minesweeper and 特設掃海艇第一鶚丸 (marine fishery in Japan, 265 tons) during the fleet guards, a torpedo boat plover rushed and attacked a depth bomb. At the oil crest which the seal runs around in the water without knowing the point of the oil leak, and moves as for the water war vessel and the seaplane a depth bomb antisubmarine; bomb. The number of depth bomb and bombs cast between of ten hours of 72 [16]. The seal avoided sinking, but the oil leak still less stops and will break off patrol [17]. On July 24, the seal finishes a 30-day action; and is 帰投 in Pearl Harbor. I received repair.

I it for eighth, ninth, the tenth patrol from August, 1943 to March, 1944

August 15 [18], the seal went to the Chishima Islands area by the eighth patrol. The seal was in the south Chishima sea area on August 27. On the morning of August 31, the seal forgot to wear the clasp of the hatch of the headquarters in the case of a submarine voyage, and the seawater which I got into did a pump room for the submergence and destroyed an electricity system. The seal went to the east for repair and I let an air compressor restore provisionally and did it in the preparations that could fire a torpedo somehow. The seal which returned to the patrol sea area on September 8 patrols to cross the Sea of Okhotsk. I discovered two cargo boats, and, on September 17, the seal fired a torpedo, but did not hit it. On September 25, the seal withdrew in a patrol sea area. On October 4, the seal finished a 50-day action and did 帰投 in Pearl Harbor.

On November 7, the seal went to the Marshall Islands area by the ninth patrol. I supplied it in Johnston island [19] and performed the photorecon of each atoll of Marshal including the クェゼリン atoll until December 15 [20]. On December 19, the seal finishes a 42-day action and wants to do 帰投 in the Midway Island [21].

On January 17, 1944, the seal went to the Truk Islands area by the tenth patrol. I spied upon the Pompeii Island about the help deployment duty for the truck island air raid of February 17 by this patrol on February 22 [22]. On March 6, the seal finishes a 50-day action; and is 帰投 in Pearl Harbor. I was performed a cruise for the second overhaul by the メア island navy shipyard. In addition, the captain took place of Major John H Turner (Annapolis 1936 tuple).

I it for eleventh, the twelfth patrol from August, 1944 to November

On August 8, the seal went to the Chishima Islands area by the eleventh patrol. As for 15 hours, this time, seal which a day was over patrolled in the sea area that bound Muroran, pine Wajima, a hood straw mat island together from 14 hours. On August 24, the seal attacks and sinks 貨物船東征丸 (Kanamori merchant ship, 531 tons) off Cape Erimo. I discovered the cargo boat which I attached one escort ship to on September 5 and I fired four torpedoes after the chase for six hours, but did not hit it. On the night of September 8, the seal discovered six transportation fleets at 47°26'N 148°24'E / 47.433 degrees N 148.400 degrees E / 47.433, a point of 148.400. At 20:45, the seal fires four torpedoes. The torpedo hit the destroyer wind and waves of the guards and let you could not navigate the wind and waves and fall into it. A date changes, and, on 9th, the seal fires a torpedo again for a transportation fleet at 47°03'N 148°18'E / 47.050 degrees N 148.300 degrees E / 47.050, a point of 148.300. Two of them hit the army ship Singapore-maru (Pier Kobe, 5,859 tons) and attacked and sank this. Because the second carrier came toward the seal, the seal evacuates. It dawned, and an antisubmarine patrol aircraft came flying, and the seal kept still in 深深度潜航 until 17:00. It was judged several carriers to have given a blow other than Singapore-maru sinking, wind and waves overthrowing by this attack. At 20:26, the seal turned a course to the Midway Island. On September 17, the seal finished a 41-day action and did 帰投 in the Midway Island.

On October 10, the seal went to the Chishima Islands area by the twelfth patrol. On the morning of October 25, the seal discovers ヲ 303 fleet toward Otaru in the hood straw mat Island in 50°18'N 150°50'E / 50.300 degrees N 150.833 degrees E / 50.300, 得撫島北方海域 of 150.833. I fire a torpedo for the largest-scale icebreaker white positive-maru (Osaka merchant ship, 5,742 tons) among fleets. Two of them hit the white positive-maru and a great explosion was caused and sank. Three weeks later, the seal attacked a cargo boat in the Etorofu sea near the shore, and it was judged that this aim attacked and sank it. I acted off Karafuto in the last of the patrol period. On November 29, the seal finishes a 50-day action; and is 帰投 in Pearl Harbor. This became the last patrol of the seal.

Training warship, postwar

The seal engages in the training duty in the Hawaiian sea area after repair until June 1, 1945 [23]. I returned Pearl Harbor to departure from a port してに New London by the end of June [23] and engaged in a training duty until an end of World War II sequentially. When war is over, I am ordered inactivation. I moved to Massachusetts Boston in early November and I retired on November 15 and was kept by a reserve duty fleet. On June 19, 1947, I am placed on duty again and get the training warship duty of the navy reservist in Boston. I moved to New Hampshire Portsmouth in March, 1949 and continued a training duty and was removed from a register on May 1, 1956. Six days later, as for the seal, 出渠 did Portsmouth navy shipyard for the disposal.

The seal was presented with ten war stars in meritorious services in war of World War II.
