ネレイド (Nereid, Neptune II) is the second satellite of Neptune.
Discovery
I was discovered by Gerald chi par. The name comes from Davy Jones Nereid of the Greek myth. It is the third biggest following triton, Proteus in the satellite of Neptune.
Characteristic
Orbit eccentricity is the highest in the satellite in the solar system that orbit is known (in the non-satellite with the example of Sedna (e=0.86)) and has a very slim elliptic orbit. For this characteristic orbit, it is thought that asteroid or the edge Worth = Kuiper's comet belt heavenly bodies were caught by gravity of Neptune. In addition, a revolution period is approximately one year.
I am measured with 0.48 days in a rotation period, but show a different value across the range of the error whenever I observe it in this period. ネレイド is precession, and a rotation period changes, or this shows irregular turning possibility. Irregularity is the example of the turning heavenly bodies, and there is satellite Hyperion of the Saturn.
When Voyager 2 came close in Neptune in 1989, it was photographed, but the detailed picture was not provided because distance was too far.
The color of ネレイド is sad by the visible light. Revolving satellite ハリメデ resembles it in a color, and the outside is thought to have possibilities to be a piece of ネレイド more.
