Corinth (rareόρινθος[1]) is a city in the Hellenic Republic ペロポネソス district; the basic local government (D muslin) including the outskirts area. In a harbor city located in the Corinth isthmus, it is the prefecture capital of the Corintia prefecture. The notation such as Corinth is used, too.

Corinth [2] is one of Athnes and the main city states (police) along with the Sparta, and remains are left in the acropolis (acro Corinth) in ancient Greece. I prosper as a state capital of the genus state dirt air in ancient Roman age and am known as an address of the Paul letter in the Christianity culture. I passed through destruction and the rebuilding of several degrees, and, in Corinth, the city area of current Corinth was built newly at the mid-19th century by war and a disaster.

Geography

Position, expanse

Corinth [4] as the city is located to southwest approximately 78km of Athens. I hit the point that the Peloponnesus connects to the Greece mainland in a harbor city facing the Gulf of Corintia Koss side of the Corinth isthmus (an old name: chair attendants) sandwiched between west Gulf of Corintia Koss (Gulf of Corinth), the Gulf of east サロニコス. The population is secondly a populous city in 29,787 people (2001 national census) next to カラマタ in the ペロポネソス district. To northeast approximately 3km of the Corinth city, Corinth canal crossing the Corinth isthmus is dug through.

The city area of current harbor city Corinth was built after a major earthquake of 1858 newly, and there is Corinth (Al hair Corinth, [5]) since the ancient times in the inland of southwestern approximately 3km of the existing Corinth city.

5 local governments including former Corinth City were merged and, in Corinth City as the local government (D muslin) [6], were spread with the reorganization (カリクラティス reform) of the nationwide jurisdiction of 2011. As for the area of Corinth City, 6 in this way doubled.

Geographical features

Plains of the Corintia coastal line that I looked at from acro Corinth

Corinth City faces the Gulf of サロニコス to the east Gulf of Corintia Koss to the north and has the large city limits to the 海岸沿 いから mountains.

Plains spread out along the Gulf of Corintia Koss, and most of population gather on the plains (Corinth district, Aso's = レヘオ district) in northern city limits. In contrast, the Gulf of サロニコス side (サロニコス district, sled gear district) is poor in mountain がちで, the level ground. A basin opens in the inland テネア district.

History

Ancient Greece era

Apollo temple

Spring of ピレーネ

It was built in the ninth century B.C. by a Dorian (person from Doris) and prospered as a commercial city. アプロディーテー is known for the religious service of a guardian deity and the perilla.

"Corinth" is thought to be the word of the non-Greece etymology and probably is the word of the indigenous people before the Dorian. It is supposed that I have already prospered in the days of the Mycenae. The founder of Corinth is シーシュポス in the myth, and it is said that King of Corinth is the descendant. イアーソーン is said to be the land which got a divorce in メーデイア in the myth again.

Corinth located in the chair attendants isthmus who tied the Peloponnesus and the Greek mainland prospered as a strategic point of traffic and the trade and played a key role of the economy of the Greece world along with アイギナ for the classic period. After rise of Athnes and テバイ, I stood in these with financial power. Ogami of アプロディーテー which was the chief god of the town was built in the acropolis of Corinth. Plural documents convey it about 聖娼 (harlot) of 1,000 people employed in this shrine. Corinth held one of the four major competitions in Greece, イストミア big festival again.

Via 寡頭政 by バッキアダイ, I was governed in the seventh century B.C. by usurper of the throne キュプセロス, Periandros father and son and shifted to 寡頭政 again. In addition, I built the plural colonies at the start in Syracuse (current Syracuse). Corinth was one of the main polices of the Greek person in the Persia war, but bound Sparta and ペロポネソス alliance together later against Athnes allied then. One of the factors of the Peloponnesian War was a fight of Athnes and Corinth around colonial town Corcyra (current Corfu) of Corinth. It is said that it was economic power of Corinth that helped with ability for weak Spartan war continuation maintenance economically while being superior in the armaments.

I let the Roma forces which led dictator ルキウス ムンミウス dispatched from coKazumasa Roma which was always opposed in B.C. 146 surrounded Corinth and fall, and Corinth was completely destroyed (fight of Corinth). It is revealed that few inhabitants settled down in the place where there was ever Corinth from archeological evidence afterwards.

Ancient Roman age

In B.C. 44, Gaius Julius Caesar rebuilt will) of the shop Usu ユリア colonial town of colonial town colony ヤウス lily a コロニエンシス[7]Corinth. This was some fronts than Caesar was assassinated in the same year.

According to Appianos, a freedman of Rome settled as inhabitants of the rebuilt city. Under rule of the Roman Empire, Corinth played a key role of the politics of the State of genus state south Greece (or dirt air state, apostle line biography 18:12-16). Corinth prospered again and was known for wealth. A Greek, a Roman, a Jew lived mixedly as inhabitants.

Apostle Paul visits Corinth several times. At the time of the first stay, the governor-general was gallio of the younger brother of ルキウス アンナエウス Seneca (apostle line biography 18:1-18). Paul stayed in Corinth then for 18 months. Probably, at the time of the second stay, "the letter to a believer of Rome" was written.

Eastern Empire era

The town was destroyed by an earthquake for 375 years and 551 years.

For 395 through 396, the ARA Rick first of the west Goth invaded and attacked in Greece. Corinth became one of the city plundered by him, and many citizens were sold as a slave.

A big cliff face was built from Emperor of Eastern Empire Justinian first (the reign: for from 527 years to 565 years) under the government of, the Gulf of サロニコス to the Gulf of Corinth and protected a city and the Peloponnesus from the invasion of the northern savage tribe. The cliff face was named exa- million [8] at approximately 6 miles in length (10 kilometers). This time, Corinth were the center of the trouble (district under jurisdiction of military) of Hellas (they mean modern Greece).

(during the rule of the コムネノス dynasty), Corinth prospered by the silk trade with Latin countries of West Europe in the twelfth century. However, the wealth attracts Norman attention of Sicily of the Ruggero second under the government of and will be plundered in 1147.

アカイア dukedom

In 1204, ジョフロワ first, de ヴィルアルドゥアン was given Corinth with the title of the アカイア grand duke after the Constantinople fall by the fourth Crusade (アカイア dukedom). The ジョフロワ first is a nephew of the famous historian (ジョフロワ de ヴィルアルドゥアン) of the same name embedded with the fourth Crusade.

The Corinthian depended on a fortress of acro Corinth under the conduct of the Greek general Leo Suguro's (English version) from 1205 through 1208 and resisted the rule of the frank person. When French knight, Guillaume first, de beautifulness Ritt participated in the war, the Leo Suguro's was pessimistic about war situation in 1208 and jumped off it from acro Corinth and committed suicide. But the Corinthian continued resisting the enemy force afterwards until 1210.

After collapse of the resistance, Corinth became the part of the アカイア dukedom, and it was in the place that a person of ヴィルアルドゥアン ruled over from Andorran Ouida (English version) of the A squirrel which was a capital. Corinth was the last important city of the northern border of アカイア along with the Athens dukedom which was other Crusade nations. Byzantine Empire conquered Corinth again in 1388 and assumed it a part of the Prince Moreas autocracy territory. Osman empire occupies this town in 1395, and Byzantine Empire recaptures it afterwards in 1403. The Prince Moreas autocracy Theodoros second pareo logos (the reign: for from 1407 to 1443) builds the wall [9] of the exa- million to cross the Corinth isthmus.

Rule of Ottoman Empire and independence war in Greece

In 1458 five years after the fall of Constantinople, Osman empire conquered a city and a fort of Corinth. Turks change the place name of Corinth to Gördüş (Gördes), and govern the Peloponnesus district of the ルメリ state (south Balkan area); leaked, and did it with a center of the sanjak (prefecture) of a [10].

In 1687, a person from Venice occupied this ground and entered the domain of the Venice republic in Carlo Vitz treaty in 1699, but Ottoman Empire acquired again this ground in 1715. This ground became the capital of the モレア state from 1715 through 1731 and became the center of the sanjak from 1731 through 1821.

At the time of an independence war from 1821 through 1830 in Greece, the city was completely destroyed by the Turkish military. Corinth was let loose formally by London treaty (English version) of 1832. The candidates of the new capital (at first as a capital in ナフプリオ) of the Greek kingdom performed the founding of a country of newly in 1833 included Corinth from the historic importance and a strategic location. Athene who was not important was chosen as the new capital at that time after all.

Construction of the existing city

A map of 1908. I can grasp acro Corinth (Akro-Corinthe), old city (Corinthe), the relations of Shinshigai (Nelle Corinthe)

The Corinth city was completely destroyed by a major earthquake of 1858. After an earthquake, a new city area was built in the seashore of the 3km northeast in substitution for old city (Al hair Corinth). A new town called ネア Corinth (new Corinth) is current Corinth city. New Corinth is hit by a big fire in earthquake, 1933 in 1928, but accomplishes revival afterwards each time.

In 1885, Piraeus Athens ペロポネス railroad [11] extended to Corinth. This route adopted a meter gauge of 1000mmm between the gauge. It is nationalized later.

There was the thought to dig a canal in the Corinth isthmus from the ancient times, but when it was in the late 19th century, I was detonated by contact by the Suez Canal opening to traffic (1869), and the time of the canalage increased. The full-scale construction is begun in 1882, and Corinth canal is inaugurated in 1893.

The Corinth port is located in the northern part of the city area facing the Gulf of Corintia Koss. It is close to the northwest side (the Gulf of Corintia Koss side) exit of the Corinth canal. A new wharf was built in the late 1980s, and the quantity of freight handling possibility increased twice as much as then.

This port is used for the export of freight mainly and satisfies demand for local industry, agriculture. The main export is citrus fruits, a grape, marble, aggregate (gravel or the sand which are materials of the concrete). When Piraeus port stopped a function by strikes, the Corinth port has the facilities which can cope with a general cargo boat and self-unloader, an RO-RO ship in place of this.
