Summary

It is main street of Oita-shi that lies across the center of the city area in the north and south. At approximately 400m in total length, the number of the traffic lanes is one side 3 traffic lane, road width 20m. I am connected to National highway No. 197 (according to Showa) each at a street intersection at the north end of the Showa era at National highway No. 10 (according to industry) at Oita station square intersection at the south end. Even if road in itself goes over the street intersection of the Showa era, it continues straight, and this part is often called it by the north in the name of Chuo-dori to the Shinkawa intersection, too, but, in the route top, as for the parts from the Showa street intersection to the Shinkawa intersection, it is in Oita prefectural road 511 Oita Port line not a municipal road.

It is lined with these branches of the financial institution including four RAS, the commercial facilities including the large size commercial facilities such as the Tokiha head office and the Oita Bank head office considerably considerably along a street during to the street intersection of the Showa era from the station square intersection. The northern part of west of the street is one of the malls that adopted tile pavement earliest in Oita and is named a red brick street mall. In addition, the malls of galleria Takecho mall, the Fifth Avenue mall in the prefecture extend to the east and west starting from Chuo-dori. Saint Porta Chuoucho mall extends to the west parallel to Chuo-dori and achieves the role of the substitute way of the walker to pass in the Chuo-dori direction.

Along Chuo-dori, Oita Bus, a lot of bus stops of Oita Transportation are established, and, for both companies which do not have a bus terminal in the city area center, the bus terminal functions substantially considerably in conjunction with the station square [note 1]. Therefore, a large number of buses stop and pass it and are combined with a car accessing city area and Oita Station and cause the congestion of Chuo-dori.

In the case of the Oita Star Festival Festival to be practiced in August, Chuo-dori is done with a vehicle-free promenade, and I dance in the prefecture round paper and チキリン ばやし citizen all-out, and it is every year in the meeting place of the meeting. It is by the illuminations event called the fantasy which I put performed in December in a main meeting place, and just what is colored every year by gorgeous illumination.

History

Prewar Chuo-dori

The area of the Oita Bank old head office (existing red brick building) was a moat in the castle in the prefecture, and, until the middle of Meiji era, the part of the north side of this street was the damp ground where a house lay scattered in the south side. Though Buzen and Bingo Main Line (current Nippo Main Line) Oita Station started a business in the present location in (1911) in 1911, I filled up a moat in total, and the street equal to current Chuo-dori was made.

There was the city area of ex-Oita-shi in the place around Shinkawa and Takecho of the north side a little than the present. However, because Oita Station started a business, and an Oita Transportation other size line of the streetcar was extended through this just what to Oita Station in (1917) in 1918, Tokiha opened a store in (1936) in 1936, and a center of commerce was gradually formed along Chuo-dori.

Because a bridge called 碩田橋 was built near current Takecho in the castle in the prefecture when it was a moat, this just what was ever called 碩田橋通 り (せきでんばしどおり). In addition, "碩田" (I got up) is an old name said to that the Emperor Keiko named it in "Bungo country topographical record" for Bungo country (a part of current Oita) in this area. In addition, I was called the street with a car track because an Oita Transportation other size line went once.

The center suffers crushing damage by an air raid considerably (1945) on July 17 in 1945 and becomes the burnt field, and it is said that the sea was seen when I see Chuo-dori from the station square over there.

Pedestrian crossing and pedestrian bridge under the ground

I crossed the basement of Chuo-dori (1967) on September 9 in 1967, and the Oita's first basement pedestrian crossing that bound hall (existing Oita Bank red brick building) front and in front of in the prefecture in front of Tokiha (existing Tokiha Head Office) in front of Sumitomo Bank Oita branch, Yamasaki building together was completed [1].

A-shaped pedestrian bridge of the "ro" was established (1968) at the street intersection of this street at the north end of the Showa era in May in 1968. However, for becoming it, a pedestrian crossing is established (2012) in August in 2012, and the pedestrian bridge closes barrier-free (2013) on May 6 in 2013 [2]. Dismantling construction was carried out from July 15, and a body portion was removed from the middle of the night of October 15 through the early morning of 16th [3].

The abolition and vehicle-free promenade of the streetcar

An Oita Transportation other size line was abolished (1972) on April 5 in 1972, and the orbital removal and maintenance construction were performed from May 8, and the setting of the safety zone (green belt) was performed [4]. This safety zone was removed in 2006 and became able to use the traffic lane of both sides integrally. As a result, in 2006 and 2007, a social experiment to assume Chuo-dori a vehicle-free promenade is performed over twice [5]. The vehicle-free promenade was not carried out afterwards, but first in 9 years in 2016; is carried out [6].

Maintenance plan

In Oita-shi, I plan maintenance of Chuo-dori as part of downtown area north and south axis maintenance business with the redevelopment around Oita Station. In late years the highway around the center was maintained by original Sano Line of 庄 at the start and, based on traffic of Chuo-dori having decreased [note 2], reduced the number of the traffic lanes of Chuo-dori and was decided a policy to plan the activation of the center by widening the sidewalk, and increasing walkers.

I did 6 current traffic lanes with 4 traffic lanes by 2017 after having carried out a social experiment in the draft published on November 15, 2012, and 3 traffic lanes and policy of two phases of maintenance to do were shown more by 2021. 3 traffic lanes sometimes assume 1 traffic lane (3.75m in width), Funaimachi side (the west) 2 traffic lanes on Chuoucho side (the east side) and establish the stop Zone of the bus taxi of 2.5m in width on the Chuoucho side. Spread to 10.75m in width on 12m in width, Funaimachi side on Chuoucho side, and the sidewalk of 7m in width assumes 2.5m in width on the road side a bicycle lane together now. Start construction in 2014, and maintain Chuoucho side by 2017, and do it with 4 traffic lanes, and maintain the Funaimachi side, and is going to do it afterwards with 3 traffic lanes by 2021 [8]; [9] [10].

Reducing a traffic lane from 3 traffic lanes to 2 traffic lanes on Chuoucho side on August 25, 2014, and widening the sidewalk (in the Funaimachi side as 3 traffic lanes), and establishing the space for a special event and rest decision [11] [12]. I reduced Chuoucho side to 2 traffic lanes, and, in March, 2015, a falsework to widen the sidewalk 3.25m was carried out. However, in the mayoral election of April, Iwao Kugimiya who promoted traffic lane decrease is transferred for an election for prefectural governor, and Itsuki Sato Ichiro quite has been elected the mayor. I made clear that a halt did traffic lane decrease in November and returned a falsework [13], and temporary removal construction was carried out for [14], from February, 2016 to March [15].
