モッティ

モッティ

モッティ (Motty, from July 11, 1978 to July 23, 1978) is an England, Cheshire-born male elephant. I am known as a mongrel of the only Asian elephant and African elephant as far as it is proved.

Life

モッティ was born between mother "Sheba" [1] of the Asian elephant and father "Jumbolino" [2] of the African elephant in Chester Zoo (en:Chester Zoo). The nickname called "モッティ" is associated with George Mottershead which founded Chester Zoo in 1931.

I woke up an infectious disease from umbilical region, and, in spite of thorough care, モッティ died of only 12th after birth. By the autopsy result, necrotic enteritis and sepsis due to Escherichia coli were considered to be the cause of death of モッティ.

The specimen of モッティ is stored in London natural history Museum.

Appearance

Cheeks, an ear (for a long time sharp earlobe), the leg (thin for a long time) included the appearance of the African elephant, and the number of nails (front part 5, rear 4) and the single digitation of the tip of nose had the characteristic of the Asian elephant. The body which the wrinkle moved to resembled an Asian elephant. The previous head comprised one lump and lump small in the front part two. The body was an African elephant type, but the central upheaval had the characteristic of the Asian elephant, and the rear upheaval was an African elephant type.

Biology

An Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and African elephant (Loxodonta africana) are different generic elephants. Because the number of chromosomes is the same, the mating of both is possible theoretically at least.
