Summary

It was released a plan, editing during only one month by Taisho Kanto earthquake generated on September 1, 1923 while the publishing trade received a big blow. It is written down to the colophon with publication on print, October 1 on September 27, the same year. With numbers various by the person concerned including 400,000 copies about print, the circulation 300,000 copies of first editions in total [1].

The picture of the earthquake fire is drawn on the cover by Taikan Yokoyama. The photograph which I took of a terrible sight of the Great Kanto Earthquake for page 80 is placed, and a text article about the damage situation of the earthquake disaster is written for page 300 among them.

Publication, circulation

The quick publication was realized by having various factors and coming at the same time. At first want to be able to perform printing in spite of the damage of the earthquake disaster in Hakubunkan printing office (forerunner of Kyodo Printing) [2]; [3]. In addition, editing was able to call out a subeditor of "King" during foundation of a periodical preparations in those days in an office [3]; [4]. Furthermore, about the paper, I supplied the text paper from OJI PAPER, and the art paper for the photograph was able to use the import paper for other companies [5].

Because the packing as the book was difficult under the influence of an earthquake disaster, negotiated the shipment of the completed book with Ministry of Railways and paid a rate at the same level as a book, but got permission that the simple appearance at the same level as a magazine was enough for the packing and was transported as the book which was handled as a magazine [3]; [6]. The sale number of copies increases in those days because a distribution channel is different from a magazine in a book, and the sales network of the magazine was substantial than a book; contributed [6]; [7].

By the success of this book, the bibliopolism in the distribution channel of the magazine is constant and will be connected for the conclusion of publication circulation system which is not seen in the foreign countries to sell a book and a magazine through the same distribution channel [8]. In addition, a book came to be sold like a magazine in large quantities and contributed to the later one-yen book boom [8].
