The town where Sumita-cho (すみたちょう) is located in Southeast Iwate.

In late years the depopulation advances, and a ratio among the population of the elderly person is high. Because an abundant forest resource and wood fabrication plant are maintained, I aim at "the town of the best forest, forestry in Japan". The Kesen (I cannot put it out) county was constructed in Sumita-cho and former Sanriku town, but is comprised only in Sumidamachi because former Sanriku town was complicated now with Ofunato-shi.

Geography

Position

Sumita-cho is in the southeastern part of Iwate, the southern part of Kitakami Highlands and is at the position of approximately 90km from Morioka-shi. Ofunato-shi, Rikuzentakata-shi, Ichinoseki-shi, Oshu-shi, Tono-shi, Kamaishi-shi are adjacent clockwise from the east.

Geological feature

I consist of a Paleozoic sedimentary rock and Mesozoic igneous rock, and approximately 80% are occupied with a sedimentary rock.

Topography

The flatland is full of every direction among mountains, and there is few it. A village and the farming ground are greatly concentrated in the western part along the Kesen River which meanders, and goes south and the branch from the northeastern part of town.

Every direction is surrounded by the heap of 600-1300m above sea level. The forest cover becomes 30,289ha and approximately 90% of total areas. A ratio of forest under private ownership is 73.7%, and the artificial plantation rate of those becomes 53.8%.

I see the down stream from a bridge of the Showa era

I can catch a kind of trout char (the March removal of a ban), sweetfish (the July removal of a ban) in a clear stream flowing through the town, the Kesen River. In addition, I perform dam construction in the long stride river of the branch (dam belonging to Tsu).

Climate

The Kesen area (Sumita-cho,), Rikuzentakata-shi including the Ofunato-shi (former Sanriku town) is a warm climate in Iwate, and Sumita-cho is the climate that it is easy to relatively spend under the influence of inland climate from the influence of the Pacific climate in the summer warmly in winter in particular because it is cool.

Origin of the place name

Sumita is the synthetic place name which I took each by one character from Kamiarisu-mura, Shimoarisu-mura and Setamai-cho after having merged. I was going to have Naruse-cho that came from the Kesen river (Naruse River) which flowed through the area on the occasion of merger discussion, but it was the current place name by objection.

Matchlock gun corps

Kesen area is Date territory before and because fuses used for the matchlock of the feudal clan for show were produced in Mt. Goyo sitting astride current Sumidamachi and Ofunato-shi, Kamaishi-shi, a Mt. Goyo matchlock gun corps is formed and can see the state by various events in those days.

By this event, I was able to do astronomical observation using the car "astrocar" which carried an astronomical telescope. The holding was finished marking with 2005 last by "infinite company Chinese word order indicator" having been dissolved.

KESEN ROCK FESTIVAL

As a music event divided by すたーうぉっちんぐに charges, "KESEN ROCK FESTIVAL" is performed every year from 2011 in kind Yamatakahara in July.
