A Sobe communication place (そべつうしんじょ) is the U.S. Forces in Japan facility which was in Yomitan-son, Okinawa. A popular name elephant's cage (cage).
Summary
The plottage had approximately 200m in diameter, the cage (cage) model antenna such as the huge cage of 28m in height at 535,000 square meters (0.53 square kilometers) and, with an older sister marsh communication place to be near the Misawa airport of Aomori (by cf. item in the "Misawa airport" article concerned), was used as intercept facilities of the military communication. US Navy performed the management, and the stationary forces number of employees was 31 people.
The number of the landowners was 457 people, and the annual rental was 365 million yen. Because some landowners refused the update of the lease in 1995 and refused a substitution signature of the Governor of Masahide Ota Okinawa land forced use, it was an illegality occupation state by Japan for one year from April, 1996 when a lease was sharp. Prior to the expiration of this lease contract, a wooden fence was installed (it was not impossible till then to approach the steel tower of the thing which received the control of the base guard). The illegal occupation state was canceled by revising United States Armed Forces site special measures law in 1997.
These facilities would be transferred in camping Hansen by US base reorganization and were returned to Japan entirely in the end of December, 2006 when the maintenance of new facilities was completed, and the full-scale removal work of the facilities including the antenna was performed from May 31, 2007, and, on June 8, 2007, all antennas were removed. In addition, the steel tower group which caused the name with "an elephant's cage" uses higher facilities for similar facilities built newly in camping Hansen without existing.
