Shimokita Peninsula (しもきたはんとう) is a peninsula in the northeastern part of Aomori. The whole peninsula becomes Shimokita Hanto Seminational Park, and there is Mount Osore of 大間崎 which is the northernmost ground of Honshu and the Japan's three biggest hallowed ground.

I am called "Tonami Peninsula" for old Tonami feudal clan (from "everybody from Hokuto and to the south emperor state" naming), and there is another name of "the poleax peninsula" "鉞半島" because a peninsula is similar to form of "鉞" (poleax).

It is located in Northeast Aomori. Shimokita hill pushes it out linearly towards the north from the neighborhood of Noheji-machi. A big triangular peninsula pushes it out more towards the west from the northern part and becomes the form winning over half of the east sides of the Gulf of Michinoku. There is flat Tachi Strait between Tsugaru Peninsula in the west. The northeast edge of peninsula is 大間崎 where 尻屋崎 equal to the terminal part, the northwest edge of Shimokita hill are the northernmost tip of Honshu.

The Mount Osore Mountains which assumes Mt. Kamabuse (879m) the highest peak open, and the part equal to "a blade of the poleax" has little level ground. Tanabu low land opens in the junction with the Shimokita hill, and Mutsu-shi that is metropolis of the peninsula is right here. The part equal to "a pattern of the poleax" is north and south approximately 50km, East-West 10-15km. I separate the Gulf of Michinoku from the Pacific, and the monkey ヶ forest dune which is the biggest in Japan is in the northern part, and Lake sea trace including the Lake Kogawara lines up on the Pacific side at the south end. The Mount Osore Mountains and the Shimokita hill were separated from Honshu at the straits approximately 200,000 years ago, but because an ocean current washed Mount Osore Mountains and carried a large quantity of earth and sand, they formed plains to tie land to and formed a dune and a river-bed lake of the Pacific coast. In addition, I eroded in the western part of Mount Osore Mountains mainly involving the green tuff and formed strangely shaped rocks group of Hotokegaura [1].

The cities, towns and villages at Shimokita Peninsula are as follows. Mutsu-shi, Shimokita-gun (Kazamaura-mura, Ooma-machi, Sai-mura, Higashidori-mura), Kamikita-gun (Yokohama-machi, Noheji-machi, Rokkasyo-mura). A population of 101,594 people, area 1,876.82km², population density 54.1 /km². (on October 1, 2016 population by estimate). In addition, the Shimokita district is sorted around Tanabu, Mutsu-shi by three districts.

Climate

I belong to a Sea of Japan-style climate. In addition, most areas are sorted in the division into climatic zones of Koeppen by Cfb. Because I am surrounded by the seas, it is different in a climate by an area even if I meet in the same peninsula.

  • A west street: It faces the Gulf of Michinoku. Winter has much snow hotly in the summer.
  • A north street: It faces the Tsugaru Strait. Wind to blow it from the Tsugaru Strait in winter is strong, and there are few snowfall and quantity of snow.
  • An east street: It faces Tsugaru Strait and the Pacific. Influence of the periodic wind (I let you stop) to blow from the northeast in summer is strong. There are many snowfall and quantity of snow in the mountains, but there is few it in the coastal place.
  • Yokohama-machi, Kamikita-gun, Noheji-machi: It faces the Gulf of Michinoku. Winter has much snow.
  • Rokkasyo-mura, Kamikita-gun: It faces the Pacific. As well as Higashidori-mura, there are many snowfall and quantity of snow in the mountains, but there is few it in the coastal place.

Natural

Because Shimokita Peninsula is located at the northernmost part of Honshu and becomes the northern limit place of some creatures, I am defined by the Blakiston line which is a distribution boundary line between peninsula and Hokkaido. Japanese monkeys (Japanese monkey of the northern limit) inhabit the north in the primates except the Homo sapiens most in the world, and it is the northern limit place of Asiatic black bear and Japanese antelope, and a tree frog hits the northern limit of the breeding in Ooma-machi. In addition, the Asiatic black bear population of Shimokita Peninsula is evaluated as "endangered local population" in Red Data Book of Ministry of the Environment [2]. In addition, a dace of 宇曽利湖 is known as fish inhabiting the strong acid-related lake and inhabits under the environment beyond the limit of the acidity that fish can inhabit generally.

At Shimokita Peninsula, there is "the special plant community of a sewing guidepost stone mountain, the sewing guidepost stone" appointed to the natural monument of the country, and Oura fold Gyrophora esculenta and Kizaki rowan, コメバツガザクラ grow it. In addition, the western part of Shimokita Peninsula is appointed (1984) in the country designation Shimokita sanctuary (rare birds and beasts habitat) on November 1 in 1984 (4,946ha in area, house special protection district 1,068ha).

Traffic

The construction of the Shimokita Peninsula traversing road spreading from Noheji-machi is pushed forward now.

A ferry is navigated from Ooma-machi at the north end to Hakodate of Hokkaido. I do shopping to Hakodate across Tsugaru Strait at these outskirts, and there are a lot of people visiting a hospital for treatment. In addition, the ferry (winter season suspension) binding high speed ship and Wakinosawa and Kanitamachi of Tsugaru Peninsula that link the Aomori Port to Wakinosawa, Mutsu-shi, Sai-mura together is navigated.

Flow between spheres of life

According to Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport "whole country main line traveler net flow investigation," the net flow of the person who assumes Shimokita departure place or a place of residence is as follows. In the investigation, there are not the flow data between each sphere of life in Aomori, but it is thought that there is more flow with Shimokita and 38 not separated by water Kamikita districts and Aomori-shi of the prefectural seat than the following sphere of life.

In Shimokita Peninsula, the whole peninsula becomes Shimokita Hanto Seminational Park. There is hallowed ground Mount Osore where a lot of hot springs are famous in 尻屋崎, 大間崎, イタコ in the beauty spot.
