Summary

A town of the bow tie more with distillery and the Kira low parish church (known as Kilarrow Parish Church, round church Round Church) is a center, and other towns include port Ellen (Port Ellen).

As for the population of the Ira Island, a total area is 600km2 in approximately 3,400 people [1]. The main industry is the distillation and sightseeing of the malt whisky.

This island is known as the nest building ground of the wild bird of many kinds and it is the place where is popular among bird watchers, but can observe a large-scale colony of カオジロガン particularly in February through the year. Besides, the bird visiting this island has chough, hen harrier, an oysterbird, many kinds including the common cormorant.

The day when it is warmer than Scottish Motojima has many climates of the Ira Island under the influence of the Gulf Stream. There are many people thinking that Ira island is the island that is the most beautiful in Scotland where the hand of the person does not enter very much.

Geography

A satellite photo of the Ira Island. The screen top is the north. I am only around 700m away from the Julla Island of the screen top right corner.

Like most of Scotland, I am formed of a metamorphic rock formed in the Archeozoic era. I am formed of a very old rock, and the metamorphic rock more than 2,500 million years ago appears on the surface of the earth. Furthermore, a horizontal fold appears on the surface of the earth clearly. It was the end of the グランピアン mountain range which originally the Ira Island ran the Scottish central part southwest from the northeast, and spread. It is a continental island formed by a rise in sea level. The Ira Island opens for north and south 30km, East-West 40km, and most are less than 100m above sea level, but the part forming the end of the mountain range ranging from the Jura island happens to around 400m for the southeastern part.

The residents of this island gather mainly around bow tie more, port Ellen, a village such as Port Charlotte (Port Charlotte, Sgioba). Other small villages include ポートナハーヴン (Portnahaven, Port na h-Abhainne), bridge end (Bridgend, Beul anÀtha), ブルイックラディ (Bruichladdich, Bruthach Cladach), port アスケイグ (Port Askaig, Port Asgaig). Each place is dotted with several small villages in the place except this, and most become level ground, hilly areas including the farmland. In addition, damp ground of rich Pete opens in each place of the island, and these are cut and brought down and it is dried and is used as fuel in whiskey production and a process. The southwestern part of the main body of the island is a large rocky place called the O (The Oa, An Obha). The part such as the western arm of the island is called phosphorus of Ira (Rinns of Islay, Na RoinnÌleach). There are Loch フィンラガン (Loch Finlaggan), Loch ゴロム (Loch Gorm), Loch Barry Grant (Loch Ballygrant), some lakes such as Loch alane (Loch Allan) in this island. Similarly the place name which there is of Loch has Loch グリュイニャルト (Loch Gruinart), Loch in Dahl (Loch Indaal), but these are gulfs.

History

The history of the Ira Island began in the Middle Stone Age of B.C. 8000, and a person lived consistently afterward during approximately 10,000 years.

The oldest historic document about the Ira Island was related to Saint Columba. When probably I found the monastery of the アイオナ island in the sixth century, this saint goes by way of Ira Island.

Most and the Irish northern coast whole area of the Scottish West Coast were put under the control of the McDonald's whole families who based on Loch フィンラガン of the Ira Island from the 14th to the 16th century, and the head of a family was called a feudal lord (Load of the Isles) of islands. The ancestor of this feudal lord can sail it up until the times of the Dane defeat off Ira by let (Somerled) in summer of 1156. The フィンラガン trust treats many remains, mementos of this time, and the island is opened for a visitor every day (in the remains in some Kojima of the フィンラガン lake). The フィンラガン trust has the visitor center opening for a few days again in a week. The popular program "thyme team" series of British channel 4 photographed excavation of フィンラガン on 26th from June 24, 1994. This episode was broadcasted for the first time on June 8, 1995.

From the beginning of the 1830s, the population of the island that was 15,000 people has begun to decrease as a result of highland Clare Lance and voluntary emigrant in the peak (as for the current population approximately 3,400). Most of emigrants from Ira emigrated to Ontario, Canada and キャロライナス (north calorina state, south calorina state) of the United States or Australia.

Climate

I am affected by the Gulf Stream, and the climate is extremely calm. The snow is rarely seen, and there is a few it, and the frost disappears immediately, too. It is not unusual for an exotic plant to be planted in the garden. However, it is not rare that a strong wind to blow it from the winter Atlantic causes various problems. As Easter approaches, the weather is restored, and relatively good weather continues afterwards until September, but the unstable weather which seems to be Scotland is seen in this island, and influence often appears for the traffic by a break, wind and rain during a short time. Therefore the person intending to come and go to the Ira Island must make a plan in mind by the suspension of service, the delay of a ferry and the airplane.

It is difficult to obtain weather statistics data of the Ira Island, but the British Meteorological Agency continues taking the data of the next Thai Lee Island after 1928. It is thought that it is not greatly different from this in the climate.

Traffic

There are two main roads, and an A846 line, the other that one leads to port アスケイグ through port Ellen, bow tie more from アードベッグ are A847 lines going down the East Coast of phosphorus. Most of roads of other islands are 1 traffic lane road with the shunting point.

There is an airport (Ira Airport) in bow tie more and グレンネゲデール located midway of port Ellen and makes a round trip between Glasgow. A periodical ferry linking ケナクレイグ of the Kyn Thai a half island for two hours leaves from two ports of port Ellen and port アスケイグ. There is the route going to Oban on Wednesday only during スカラセイグ and summer of the colon Sei Island in port アスケイグ. These are run by pretty D'ni Ann マクブレイン company. Ferries from port アスケイグ to フェオリン of the Julla Island are navigated regularly, too, but a local government runs this. In late years small ferries from Craig house of the Julla Island to テイヴァリヒ of the Scottish mainland came to be operated regularly, and some traffic with the mainland was improved.

Distillery

I showed port Ellen where only a part of the building remained in as of the position of the distillery of the Ira Island by a deficit.

It was a distillery located the west most until ブルイックラディ distillery March, 2005.

The whiskey (Scotch Whiskey whiskey) to be able to make in Ira Island is known as "Ira malt" and is スモーキー さが characteristic by Pete (peat).

There are eight distilleries as of 2016, and the whiskey of the fragrance of Pete who is strong sequentially in mosquito re-lah (Caol Ila), ard Beck (Ardbeg), ラガヴーリン (Lagavulin), ラフロイグ (Laphroaig) is made from the southern distillery, east of the island. Bow tie more, ブルックラディ (Bruichladdich), ブナハーヴン (Bunnahabhain), kill Ho man (Kilchoman) are produced in the north side of the island. ブナハーヴン, the whiskey of ブルックラディ are non-Pete, but after all a kill Ho man and Port Charlotte produced in ブルックラディ, three kinds of whiskey called the octomore have strong Pete incense. After all port Ellen having strong Pete incense is closed in 1983, and a part of the building remains now, and only a malt factory (malt star) adjacent now continues operating it. Loch in Dahl of Port Charlotte is closed in 1929. In late years a bottling plant is opened in the ブルックラディ distillery, and batting and the bottle of the whiskey go, too. ブルックラディ distillery is the distillery where a bottle makes a malt in Ira. In addition, it is the distillery which was particular about terrorism Waal of the Ira Island to use the barley which I cultivated in Ira Shimauchi (the "Ira bar lei" series), and to let all barrels mature in Ira Shimauchi.

The kill Ho man distillery who opened to Loch side farm in June, 2005 distilled the beginning in November of the year. A fire included モルティング floor in February, 2006, but I receive supply of the dry barley malt from a malt star of port Ellen and I continue the distillation, and the モルティング floor is rebuilt with a different figure and produces home brew drying barley malt now. This distillery was a distillery located in the west, the south of Loch ゴロム in the west peninsula center of the island more than ブルイックラディ distillery, and it was in a distillery located in the west most among distilleries of the Scotch Whiskey whiskey.

In late years there was a plan that ブルックラディ distillery installed the facilities of the インヴァーレーヴン distillery in the building of the former Loch in Dahl distillery and opened the distillery by the name of the Port Charlotte distillery, but was called off.

A plan to produce by the open fire distillation that the construction of the ガートブレック distillery is pushed forward to south 3km of the bow tie more distillery along Gulf of in Dahl, and is weak, a woodenness tun, the tradition manufacturing method called the circularly wound piping type refrigerator. I plan shipment after distillation start, 2018 in 2015. [2][3]

Separately from whiskey, an original yell of the Ira Island is made newly. The Ira yell opens on March 22, 2004 and produces seven kinds of yells continuously and makes the special beer for a malt and a festival of the music to be carried out every year again. The Ira house square which was slightly off the bridge end has the brewery.

In addition, in the ブルックラディ distillery, Ira Island only gin called the botanist is produced. Other than basic ボタニカル (ジュニパーベリー) of nine kinds of gin, ボタニカル (flower, herb, tree) growing wild in 22 kinds of Ira Island is used and is distilled by Lomond steal said to that I operate it alone in the world (the distillation is carried out in the steal house of the ブルックラディ distillery).

Other industry

Whiskey industry is a key industry of the Ira Island, but industry of the islands includes the brewing, stock raising (cow, sheep, pig, alpaca), agriculture, a persimmon of the beer and the cultured work, fishery, textile (wool), ceramic art, sightseeing of the scallop in others. Sightseeing may be brisk for these past several years, and a small studio of an industrial art object (batik print and glass industrial art object) and the food (fudge and chocolate) is opened newly. Cheese and the mineral water were special products of this island once, too, but, as for the cheese, the mineral water finishes the production in 1994 in 2000.

Use of advanced energy

Because a position of the Ira Island is a place exposed to Atlantic angry waves, the Scottish first wave power plant will be put. I received financial support of European Union and realized the wave force generator named LIMPET (Land Installed Marine Powered Energy Transformer) by Wavegen company of the inverness cape and a design and the construction by researchers of the Queen's University of Belfast. The company is the company which Alan Wells professor of the Queen's University organized in 1990 and is possession of Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation which is a subsidiary of Voith Siemens company from 2005. The generator called Limpet500 distributes electricity of 500 kilowatts to the distribution network of the island. It became the world's first commercial wave power plant in 2000. It supplies electricity to the standard home from July, 2008.

I reuse residual heat of the whiskey production in whiskey production, the heating in the place, a warm water pool in the bow tie more distillery, and wind-generated electricity is Gaelic University イオナトゥ ハルム ヒーレ イーレ of the bow tie more in the port lacing braid center which is an area community center of Port Charlotte, and solar batteries are used, and a trial to save use of the fossil fuel is performed.

Furthermore, the setting of the tide generator propeller-type in the bottom of the sea at the south end of Ira Strait, the setting of the wind-power generator is planned on the west sea of the conditioner, and an investigation of the influence to give discussion and the environment with the hometown about the facilities of the Ira straits begins.

Fishing

The Ira Island is one of the famous spots of spotted sea trout fishing superior in Europe. Because an imported rainbow trout has not been released in this island, this "brownie" is still a dominant species in the ecosystem of the fresh water of this island. In 2003, a fishing meet in Europe was held in five lakes of this island. Fishing is carried out in most land facing the river and the lake, and the bank is used for fishing. The fishing at sea is popular in a place with the shipwreck of the shore in particular, too. The fishing colonizes as local sports in the Ira Island, and a fishing meet is held every year.

Media

The bow tie moa has a newspaper publisher called E lava (Ileach) and publishes a newspaper of the same name 2 once a week.

The Ira Island appears in some scenes of movie The Maggie of 1954.

BBC work Para Handy of the 1990s is photographed in Port Charlotte by some, and the race with Vital Spark (hooker of the Para handy) to Loch in Dahl and the hooker of the rival is described. The scene where students of the elementary school look at the lace in after school is famous.
