The cod (Samoan: tālā) is a currency of the Independent State of Samoa. Subsidiary units include セネ (Samoan: sene) and are 1 tala = 100 セネ. The currency name is a Samoan reading of dollar and cent. Therefore I may be called the Samoa dollar [1].

History

The cod was introduced in 1967. They used New Zealand pound of Western Samoa, and both the paper money and the coin were published till then in New Zealand. The cod was replaced with 2 talas = 1 pound, and it was said that it was equal to the New Zealand dollar. The interlocking movement with the New Zealand dollar continued until 1975.

Sign

The currency sign was WS$ conventionally, but in late years came to often use WST and ST, T. However, it is written down like a 100 talas bill with WS$, and there are a cod and the thing written down afterwards even now.

Coin

In 1967, 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 セネ coins were introduced. Except 1, 2 セネ of the bronze, other coins were cast in a cupronickel. In 1984, 1 tala of the aluminum blue copper coin was published.

Paper money

As for the paper money, 1, 2, 10 talas were published in 1967 by a Western Samoan bank, and a 5 talas bill was published in 1980 by Western Samoan currency Committee. 2, 5, 10, a 20 talas bill were published in 1985 by the Samoan central bank, and, as for 50, 100 talas, publication was started in 1990. On August 1, 2008, the Samoan central bank announced the newly-issued bank note of five kinds of paper money from 5 talas to 100 talas.

Current paper money

The current paper money introduced in August, 2008 is next 5 talas, 10 talas, 20 talas, 50 talas, 100 talas. It is all a polymer bill [2]. British De la Rue Corporation produces it.
