One of the protein constituting cytoskeleton with keratin (Germany British: Keratin). I have it of microtubule, intermediate filament, actin filament and three kinds from the person who is shameless in cytoskeleton sequentially, but, of these, protein constituting the intermediate filament of the epithelium cell is keratin.

It is met, and, other than hair, a nail, the epithelium cell dies of middle diameter fiber consisting of special keratin called hard keratin in the keratin organization such as a scale, the bill of a hollow horn, reptiles and birds and stiffens. Hard keratin has the property that is hard to receive the action of the proteolytic enzyme in indissolubility to much neutrality solvents including water. This originates in the amino acid composition which is high (with wool approximately 11%) of the cystine content characterizing keratin. The peptide chain (the main structure of keratin which a large number of amino acids connected into a chain form) is linked into a halftone plate form by much disulfide-binding (S-S combination) to come from cystine. In addition, it originates in this sulfur that an unpleasant smell occurs when it burnt hair and a nail.

Keratin plays an important role as constitution protein of the middle diameter fiber in the epithelium cell which mucous membranes do not cornify, and the sheet structure of the epithelial tissue keeps mechanical strength by keratin fiber.
