Vinyl acetate (fence vinyl), another name vinyl acetate (vinyl acetate) are ester of acetic acid and the vinyl alcohol expressed in molecular formula C4H6O2. It is a material important industrially used for synthesis of polyvinyl acetate. A very small amount of polymerization prohibition agent is added that the vinyl acetate (monomer) is light and heat and polymerizes it easily. Therefore it is necessary to be refined when I use it in polymerization experiments, and to remove a polymerization prohibition agent.

Property
Physical property
Colorlessness having a characteristic sweet fragrance, a flammable liquid. Molecular weight 86.09, specific gravity 0.9312, melting point -100.2 degrees Celsius, boiling point 72–73 ° C.
Chemical property
I polymerize it by action of peroxide and the light and become polyvinyl acetate. Therefore, stabilizers such as the hydroquinone are usually added. In addition, I produce acetic acid and acetaldehyde when hydrolyzed by dilute acid or alkali.
Biological property
According to the classification of international cancer research organization (IARC), the vinyl acetate is estimated as "a material (Group 2B) that carcinogenicity to Homo sapiens is doubted". There is the report that generated highly-concentrated (10,000ppm) cancer of the esophagus for a mouse, but the evidence indicating the carcinogenicity is not really provided in Homo sapiens.
Manufacturing method
The industrial manufacturing process is classified roughly into three of the next.
- Method to compose by ethylene and acetic acid
- Method to compose by acetaldehyde and acetic anhydride
- Method to compose by acetylene and acetic acid
Only a method to compose by ethylene and acetic acid is offered for practical use 1, and other methods become outdated today.
Use
Most are used for the production of the copolymer with polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate or ethylene as raw materials of the synthetic resins.
Polyvinyl acetate
Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) is the water-clear thermoplastic resin which is provided because a radical polymerizes vinyl acetate.
Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer
Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer () (EVA) is a copolymer composed by ethylene and vinyl acetate. It is a synthetic resin with adhesive property and adaptability due to a vinyl acetate unit. It is used for coating materials (a food wrapping paper or paper cup) of paper containers, the adhesive of cloth, the paper label, emulsion-based adhesive, a chewing gum base, artificial turf, bottom materials, the bath mat of sandals, boots, jump rope for the bathroom cleaning.
Polyvinyl alcohol
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is provided when I hydrolyze an ester acetate residue of polyvinyl acetate. Because the vinyl alcohol (enol each other variant of acetaldehyde) is unstable in molecular structure and cannot polymerize this as a monomer, I am made via vinyl acetate. It is a very hydrophilic expensive synthetic resin.
