Story
Steve Everett has been ever famous as a shrewd newspaper reporter in New York, but is completely driven to the leisurely post by a work, drinking and a woman problem to Oakland Tribune of California now now.
Because Michel of the young co-worker died suddenly of a traffic accident at a certain night, Everett will succeed work of Michel the next day. It was to do the last interview coverage of murderer Frank Beecham that the death penalty was to be carried out on that day. Beecham received a death sentence by the crime that shot the woman part-time job salesclerk of the convenience store dead. The murdered woman was pregnant. Beecham lent the money to her and got into trouble over the return, and it was considered that it extended to the crime.
Everett visited the case spot and met the porterhouse of the eyewitness, but noticed that the testimony that looked at the gun was a lie. Everett proceeded to the prison and heard a story from Beecham under the name of an interview. According to it, he went to the shop to buy a steak source on that day and met the woman of the victim. She asked it to postpone the return of the debt, and he accepted it willingly. I heard a voice and the gunshot that she quarrelled with a robber while he borrowed a restroom. Somebody left the back entrance when I went out of the restroom, and she fell down. He tried her revival desperately, but a porterhouse entered there. He escapes from the back entrance unintentionally, and it is witnessed by a housewife. He did not have guns and said that I did not quarrel with a victim.
Everett that was convinced of innocence of Beecham of the case start it to wash it again. 12 hours only for the remaining time. I go to ask a charge public prosecutor a story, but am not had anything to do at all. But, it is recognized that there was already a one eyewitness in the spot. I say that the boy who bought cola saw Beecham with a sale machine. Everett realizes that the boy is a key. However, nobody knew the eyewitness of the boy even if I asked the police.
The name and address of the boy is proved to visit the house of Michel who died in an accident, and to check a coverage document. Everett visited the house of the boy called Warren, but a grandmother of Warren came out and said that Warren was stabbed to death three years ago. Everett realizes one's defeat and is discouraged.
When Everett drove a drink in frustration in a bar, I saw the program about the case on TV. When the photograph of the victim was projected, a rocket hung on her chest. It was a thing same as the rocket which a grandmother of Warren had. At the moment, Everett understood the truth of the case. It takes only 30 minutes more until execution. Everett drives a car fast and goes to the house of Warren. Preparations for execution of Beecham advanced solemnly at the prison.
The grandmother of Warren confessed the day when she got a rocket from a grandchild. I told that I thought that I must have committed a great crime just to have seen a face. Everett picks up a grandmother of Warren on the car and hurries to the house of the governor.
Execution of Beecham began at the prison. Thiopental sodium is poured by an arm, and Beecham falls into a coma. In the place where infusion of the pancuronium began successively, a telephone works from the governor. Directors pushed the switch to urgently stop and jumped into an execution room.
At night of Christmas, Everett sees a figure of Beecham of families in a town. They sent a nod of greeting each other from the remote place, and two people parted.
