The shark that オオワニザメ Odontaspis ferox (a large ferocious shark British: Smalltooth sand tiger) belongs to mouse shark eyes オオワニザメ department. A rare kind. I may be called sand tiger, but sand tiger Pseudocarcharias kamoharai of the sand tiger department is another kind. I am distributed over the warm seas of the world widely and inhabit the deep sea from the outer layer to depth of the water approximately 900m. The large shark which reaches 4.5m in total length. The appearance resembles シロワニ Carcharias taurus closely, but オオワニザメ grows big, and the proportions of the dorsal fin are different, too. The breeding style is unconfirmed, but is expected with an egg food, cannibalism type.

Distribution, habitation area
It is supposed that I am distributed over the extratropical sea area widely from the tropical zone of the world, but there are few reported cases, and the distribution level becomes clear only partially.
It is Southern California, Gulf of California, the South African coast from Gulf of Gascony (north Spain), the Madeira (Morocco) of the warm sea area and Tokyo University West of North Atlantic Ocean in south Spain and the Portuguese coast, Mediterranean Sea (Gibraltar Ionian Sea along Sicily and Messina Strait and the Italian shoreline, Greece coast, Crete, the Aegean Sea and the Turkish coast), the Japanese sea near the shore, the west Pacific such as Australia, the center Pacific of Hawaii, the east Pacific.

Form
344cm, approximately 800 kg in weight [2] male as for the maximum full length female 450cm. As for the color of the body, the back side is gray or grayish brown. A yellow ocher spot is sometimes on the back and the side. There is the opinion to include a red spot in the whole body. The ventral is 淡灰色 or white, and some abdominal surfaces of a pectoral and the ventral fin do a dark color. As for the fry, there is the thing that the tip is black of the fin. The appearance is similar to シロワニ, but, the second dorsal fin, it is bigger than an anal fin, and, in オオワニザメ, in シロワニ, the first dorsal fin and the second dorsal fin, anal fin are about the same size the first dorsal fin.
Habits
The bait creature a small fish and Cephalopoda, Crustacea.
Because a pregnancy female is not found, the breeding style is unidentified, but is expected with the developing in the womb of egg food, the cannibalism model like シロワニ [3].
The maturity size that is estimated by an investigation into Fergusson and others (2008) the male 200-250cm in total length, the female 300-350cm in total length [2]. The size when I was born is estimated to be 100-110cm in total length [2]. Because the fry is found a lot in a relatively deep depth of the water zone (place deeper than 200m), or I am born at the time of delivery and shift to the deep area immediately, and it is thought that I escape from bigger superficial predators such as a great white shark and ground shark.
Close species
オオワニザメ genus Odontaspis is two kinds, and big eye sand tiger O. noronhai (British: Bigeye sand tiger) exists elsewhere. I inhabit the deep sea of depth of the water 600-1000m of the warm ocean of the whole world and become 3.6m in total length. Most of the habits are not known. As for the tooth of オオワニザメ, as for the big eye sand tiger, both sides have accessory cusp only one by one whereas I comprise accessory cusp on both sides 2-3 each.
Breeding record
It is a rare shark, and there are extremely few breeding records. However, is Japanese Takeshima aquarium; by 2014 with 3 degrees breeding record [4]. An individual approximately 1m caught by a bottom trawling of depth of the water around 200m of the Gulf of Suruga was bred in Numazu Port deep sea aquarium from October 4, 2016 to October 14, the same year [5]; [6] [7].
