Table of contents
Distribution
Russian (Lake Baikal and neighboring rivers) approximately 90,000 of them have habitation. I am distributed over the whole lake in the summer, but I gather to the northern part for the winter season and winter there [1].
Form
It is smaller than 100-140cm in length, 50-90 kg in weight and other seals. The hair is grayish brown dark generally, but the side is gray tinged with the yellow. The fin-formed foreleg greatly develops and comprises a sharp pick to the end of the limbs. [1]An eyeball upsizes very much to look for game for sight in the water having high transparency of Lake Baikal [2]. The frontal bone which was caught in the orbit to put the eyeball narrows width to only 3mm. In addition, the adhesion region of the orbital temporal muscle moving an existing chin backward becomes small at the same time. It is thought that I supplement the function because masseter muscle develops as the substitute. [3]
Habits
A seal (Lake Saimaa, the ringed seal of the ラドガ lake inhabit both seawater and fresh water) which inhabits only the only fresh water in the world. I am good at diving and can go under water during dozens of minutes. The eating habit catches the fish such as miller's thumbs in search of bait for the sight that developed in flesh-eating and eats. It is said that it is in the ecosystemic top of Lake Baikal.
I act alone, but pair with the same partner mainly in the breeding season. I deliver a child having a white fur one for 9.5 months in a gestational period. The fur grows to the gray thing like adult 6-8 weeks later, and it changes. The life is longer than other seals in 50-55 years. [1]
Status
It is evaluated with slight concern (LC) from 2008 by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
LEAST CONCERN (IUCN Red List Ver. 3.1 (2001)) [4]
with the human being of relationships
I am captured to take meat, the fur before history on record more [1]. By permission of the Kremlin, commercial capture of 3,000 / year is carried out now.
In Japan, it is displayed in some facilities. In addition, generally it is difficult for the Baikal seal to let you do a performance, but I let the show of the first Baikal seal succeed in the Hakone garden aquarium in Japan and perform it from April, 2008 [5]. I use the name called "a hot spring seal" commonly in the Hakone garden aquarium.
