Cooperative Linux is Linux kernel working on Microsoft Windows. Dan Aloni developed it, and the abbreviated designation is coLinux. Windows 2000・Windows XP・Windows Vista・Windows 7で is available. Not an emulator and a virtual machine, it is a big characteristic that genuine Linux kernel works on Windows. Connection is allowed via network Tours such as TAP-Win32 and WinPcap to the outside network.
Dan Aloni developed the thing which Umlwin32 was before coLinux. This was going to implement a UML technology of Linux for Microsoft Windows, and Dan Aloni began development of coLinux as the thing which developed Umlwin32 more practically from the cut end different from UML.
Table of contents
Structure of the movement
- Linux kernel works as Windows application
- linux.sys is in charge of input and output from Linux kernel to / as a driver for Windows
- The hard disk uses a true partition or a disk image
- I have you distribute the main memory from Windows like general application and use it (I decide a quota by the description of the configuration file at the time of start)
- At present, display adapter and the sound adapter are not implemented. Therefore I am connected like a remote computer using X Window System and VNC to use GUI. The sound can reproduce by using a sound server.
Good point
Comparison with the virtual machine
- There are few overheads of the input and output, and the CPU clock is very high-speed because a true clock becomes same.
- Because I do not use normal BIOS start and boot loader, start is very high-speed.
- I can operate Linux as NT service.
- coLinux cannot change the kernel version.
Comparison with Cygwin
- Because coLinux is "genuine" Linux, a normal binary for Linux is available. In other words, software for abundant existing Linux is available.
- General Linux distribution such as Debian GNU/Linux and Ubuntu is available on approximately same coLinux.
- It is predominantly higher-speed in an overhead of the input and output than big Cygwin of the problem.
Comparison with the Linux system use with the other machine
- It is not necessary to perform 増備 of a PC. It costs neither the setting place nor the purchase expense for the electric consumption even more either.
Comparison with the Windows/Linux dual boot environment
- I can use software working on software and Linux to work on Windows parallel to the same time.
- I can approximately just use the existing system which installed Linux for dual boot in coLinux.
- I can start many coLinux at the same time.
