This station is the world's first shielded subway route on 18th December 1890, (English: City and South London Railway, C & SLR) opened as a station, was renovated when the construction of the tunnel inner diameter was done in the 1920s.

The station building at the opening of Boro station was very similar, but the building at the time was hardly left at both stations at the time. Both stations were similar in underground structure, but Kennington station did not have a station structure at the start of operation due to later remodeling. Although this station north line home can be accessed without any difference from the station, the south row home is directly under the northern row home and can only be accessed via a narrow staircase.
