History

Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (about 1930)
Founders hall, アリソ ビエホキャンパス
(Founders Hall, Aliso Viejo campus.)

In succession to a design of Chairperson Tsunesaburo Makiguchi Soka Gakkai (former: Soka education society) first generation, SUA was established at first in カラバサス (English version) of California as "Soka University Los Angeles branch school" in 1987 by Daisaku Ikeda Soka Gakkai international (SGI) chairperson. It was the small graduate school of the site called 2.38 km2 first. There was this place formerly in the community of the Native American called the Chumash (Chumash people). However, after being going to expand the site because SUA establishes a university, I am objected to by an environmental group protecting the soil of the Chumash tradition.

SUA will in this way move the position of the university. In 1995, the university studies purchase land in the California orange county アリソ ヴィエホ city. 18 buildings are built in the new campus; is open studies on May 3, 2001. On August 24, the same year, 120 first students entered it as an undergraduate. The graduate school in accord with カラバサス was merged in 2005 by SUA, too.

I ran from 2005 through 2007, and the first third grade graduated. It was very high, and, as for the graduation rate, students more than a one-third entered a school of higher grade more to the graduate school with 90%. In addition, according to Peterson's Guide to Four Year Colleges of 2008, 38% of SUA graduates entered the graduate school.

The graduate enters a school of higher grade in Cambridge University, Carnegie Mellon University, a Columbia University teachers college (English version), duke University, Harvard University, Hawaiian university Manoah school law school (English version), Indiana University, London school of economics, New York University, Georgetown Washington University, Oxford University, Stanford University, Saint Jones University, the University of California, Los Angeles, University of California, San Diego, University of California Irvine school, Liverpool University, Maryland University balti more school (English version) law school (English version), Pittsburgh University, University of Southern California, University of Wisconsin madison school, Vanderbilt University, Yale University, many prestigious schools including Pennsylvania University.

Characteristic

The ratio of the number of Professor several pairs of students is 9:1, and a student is the small discussion form center of an average of 13, and a class is pushed forward in one class.

Half of students is from the United States, and the remaining half comes over from Japan, India, Thailand, China, Korea, Germany, Italy, British (I include Scotland) New Zealand, Turkey, Mexico, Chile, six continents including Peru, the country more than 30.

The SUA's greatest characteristics include the scholarship system. The student that an excellent student needs a merit base, the help of school expenses is given two kinds of scholarships of the need base in SUA. In 2010, 90% of domestic and foreign students were paid a scholarship of 8 million dollars (a merit base more than 5 million dollars with a need base more than 3 million dollars) when they added it up.
Furthermore, a new system called the Soka Opportunity scholarship (Soka Opportunity Scholarship, SOS) was introduced, and school expenses became the exemption when a domestic income was in this way less than 60,000 dollars (but dormitory charge and the food expenses are not included in this); [3].

Curriculum

A class is developed by the viewpoint that let the Orient and the West fuse in general dogmatics (liberal arts) in the department. Other than basic education curricula such as philosophy, the history, the humanities, science, art, the communication, the student can choose one of four following programs as a department:

  • International study (International Studies)
  • The humanities (Humanities)
  • Society, ethology (Social Behavioral Science)
  • Environmentology (Environmental Studies)

In addition, I choose two departments and can graduate (double concentration).

Learning cluster

One of the characteristics of SUA includes a learning cluster (Learning Cluster). By the program about current topics for three weeks, a student prepares a class in cooperation with a teacher by oneself from a first semester and builds this. A purpose of the learning cluster is that I bring up a student becoming able to arrive at a proficient reply for current topics, ability for research and a critical intellectual power and to promote smartness-like participation in world. Therefore, by a scholarship of Luis & Linda Nieves Family Foundation, a training trip in the American inside and outside the country (mainly Central and South America, China, India) is possible depending on a class.

Studying abroad

All SUA student is obliged to carry out the studying abroad to the country corresponding to the language that oneself learns between 1 semester. The expense of this time is included in school expenses. Studying abroad is a Spanish area; in Madrid, Barcelona, Spain, Jalapa including Seville of Mexico, Quito, Ecuador, the Chinese zone including Costa Rican San Jose including Taipei of Chinese Nanjing, Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan (the Republic of China) is Japanese again, and is Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka. By a program to support, the student lives in homestay and a student dormitory.

Graduate school

There was the program of the graduate school in SUA in the past and was able to acquire the degree of the master called "Teaching English as a Second Language" (TESL) by the program to teach English as a second language. The ratio of the student vs. the professor was 6:1 by this program, and the tenth graduate graduated in 2006. A master program called "Educational Leadership and Societal Change" is offered newly from August, 2014. This program is offered to a doctorate for a student in hope of entrance into a school of higher grade as a leader of field of education. [4]I am examining it in future to increase further programs.

Student life

Condominium hall (Residence Halls):
"Horizon (Horizon) "," aurora (Aurora) ",
"アビオナ (Abeona) "," sunrise (Sunrise) "

SUA is a boarding university, and the student sends dormitory life unless I do special application.

There is a club (circle activity to say in Japan) where there is many it including other volunteer activity "Katz in クロウンス" (Cats in Crowns) (jazz), kendo, "circle, K(Circle K)" "カピリナ ホーロカヒ" (Ka'Pilina Ho'olokahi) (Hawaiian Polynesian dance), "sole wings" (Soul Wings) (chorus), "instant lei Dio" (Instant Radio) "a humanism in action" (Humanism in Action) "keeping sole" (Keep Soul) "a ヴァイタ Rion's Philharmonic orchestra orchestra" (Vita Leones Philharmonic Orchestra) (band) "sole Shiro's (Sualseros)" (salsa dance), "Riz mission (Rhythmission)" (hip-hop dance), "ガングルー (English version) (Ghungroo)" (Indian classic dancing (English version)), "Joe show Daiko" (Josho Daiko) (sum drum group), "stew Dent movement four nu clear ディサーマメント (English version)" (Student Movement for Nuclear Disarmament) (antinuclear movement), "a scuba diving equipment club" (Scuba Club) "parts" (The Pearl) (the news magazine which the student produces), "model united ネイションズ" (Model United Nations) in SUA.

In addition, there is a student council called "Soka Student Union(SSU)" in SUA, and nine committees hold an important decision right in a policy of SUA and take responsibility. Executive committee (Executive Council), club council (Club Senate), scholar Committee (Academic Department), person in charge three (only in the executive committee five) of the Committee on Environment (Environmental Department) are produced by the election, and by graduation Committee (Graduation Department), history Committee (History Department), spirit committee (Spirit Department), SSU publication (SSU Publications) and person in charge for each three of the Soka relations committee (Soka Relations) are selected by the incumbent executive committee officer.

Recreation center (Recreation Center)

It is hosted by a club council and holds event "Horne Ted house" (Haunted House, haunted house) of the Halloween every year for community from 2002.

Soka theatrical art center
(The Soka Performing Arts Center)

In addition, I started the holding of the university festival "international festival" (International Festival) in the same year every year on first Saturday of May. By this event, the performance (including the performance of the student) of each country more than 600 is held on three stages. The executive committee for this event is established by a person in charge and a student of SSU, too.

Ranking

With the U.S. News & World Report of 2015, was chosen as the 41st place in a liberal arts college of the United States [5]; (in 14 in 41st place, 13 in 49th place, 12 the 64th place).

The オクシデンタル University where the Barack Obama 44th charges President went to in the same order in 14 lowered the rank to the 44th place in 15, but SUA maintained a position 41st place, and it was in noble family mount Hori York University and union University (English version) and the same order that were a corner of the Seven Sisters. In the ranking, the position as TOP10 (the seventh place) becomes immovable in TOP50, the West Coast in a domestic liberal arts college.

In addition, according to the ranking, I was chosen as the fifth place in "Best Value School" of the liberal arts section (the 14 years .15 year). Super noble Amherst University, Williams University, Pomona University, Wellesley University form a line on SUA. Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, Stanford University, MIT were higher five schools in similar general section.

I was ranked the ninth place in a domestic general ranking (including the liberal arts college) in the ranking called "College Factual" in 56th place, California [6].

Besides, in a ranking called "the Happiest Freshmen" where the graduation rate of the university and the ratio of students who go on to college from the first year to the second year were made by the cause, I was chosen as the third place next to Yale University, University of Chicago in one of all universities including the liberal arts in the United States [7]. Because I follow with Princeton University, Amherst University, Stanford University after SUA, I grow up in the level that is by no means inferior to a prestigious school of the world's highest mountain.

It is about an exceptional case in the United States I see it for ten open studies only several years, and to be ranked the high rank in such a ranking.

Affiliated school

It is the setting by the educational foundation according to each, and the following schools are not so-called "attached schools".

History

Indiana was established in 1816. It was thought with Forbes that the first non-indigenous people pioneer entered in the area that became the Fountain county in early 1823, and other people continued soon [7]. The Fountain county was established in a state law of December 30, 1825 formally, and the law became effective on April 1, 1826. The domain of the county was not changed afterwards either [8]. The county name was an officer of Kentucky and was named for James Fontaine killed in action in the defeat of the her mer happened on October 22, 1790 of the northwest Indian war [9]. In the battlefield, today's Fort Wayne was near.

It was the building of the 2-story wooden frame composing type built to co-bottle ton in first county Government building 1827. Abraham Griffith took the first bill that was 335 dollars [n 1] for this construction. If a brick building was necessary, I was decided, and, in 1829 two years later, the construction plan of the new Government building was put up, but required a move of the county seat in a state law at the time. In the county seat, a thing as co-bottle ton was finally decided, and the brick county Government building was completed in 1833. The county Government building of the third generation was placed an order for in 1856 and I took 33,500 dollars [n 2] in 1857 and was completed. The first circuit court was opened in this building in January, 1860. However, a fire occurred on the same day, and, in the building, most of were destroyed. Architect Isaac Hodge loss designed the county Government building of the fourth generation and was completed in January, 1861. [n 3] [11] where the building costs were 54,624.05 dollar. [n 4] which the county Government building of the fifth generation that there was took 246,734 dollars from 1936 through 1937 now, and was built. Because this was declared when a building in front was not safe, I was rebuilt. Jacob loss brothers of Chicago undertook the construction, and Walter school of Lewis R Johnson and Lafayette designed it. I sprinkled it to the inner wall of the county Government building from 1937 through 1940, and Eugene Francis サベージ drew many frescos. The area of the fresco is 2,500 square feet (232m2) in total and draws a state of the reclamation in western Indiana [12].

The construction of ウォバッシュ and Erie Canal began in 1832 and spread southwest and was inaugurated to Lafayette in 1842. I reached the co-bottle ton in 1846, and the traffic in the county using the canal began in 1847. As for the last ship having passed this canal although the county inaugurated later's first railroad announced useless さを of the canal previously, it was in 1875 [13].

Made hole through the northern part from the east of the county where the county's first railroad was Toledo ウォバッシュ and western railroad (ウォバッシュ railroad in the back) and was extended to Attica in 1856. I passed through the west Warren county in the next year and reached to the state border with Illinois. I built it in 1855, and Indianapolis glow four building and Dan Building railroad (Indiana Bloomington and western railroad in the back) started it particularly, but was stopped for economy of the whole state in 1858. This line was completed by a different manager in 1870 and began the service of the train in 1871. I went along co-bottle ton, B da Bergh, the Hills rag in the Fountain county [14].

Township

The Fountain county is divided by 11 following tp. When I was set at first on July 24, 1826, it was 5 townships. In other words, it was Kane, Richland, show knee, Troy, ウォバッシュ. Davis, Fulton, Jackson, Logan, mil creek, 6 tp. of Van Buren were added afterwards [44].

City and town

There are a city and a town made eight corporations in the county. The maximum thing is Attica City, and the population is 3,245 people (2010). It is in the Wabash southeast side bank in northern county. American National highway No. 41, state way Route 28, Route 55 go along the city. A co-bottle ton city of the county seat is the second biggest, and the population is 2,645 (same as above). After all it is along the Wabash and is in the down stream of approximately 10 miles (16km) of southwest sides from Attica. American National highway No. 136 goes and is to the north of expressway Route 74 between states. The third town is B da Bergh town, and the population is 2,180 people. The center of the county is near, and American National highway No. 41, state way Route 136, expressway Route 74 between states intersect [1].

Other towns are less than a population of 1,000 people. It is new subdivision, メロット, Hills rag, Wallace, and state way Route 341 that lies all across the eastern part of county in the north and south is along it. Kingman is in the most southern part, and state way Route 234 goes; from American National highway No. 41 in approximately 1 mile (1.6km) west [1].

Town of non-admission

There is a town of much small non-admission in addition to the city and town mentioned above. Fulton tp. of the county southwest corner has Cates and silver Wood. Harvey's Bergh, スティームコーナー, イエッド are in east milk leak tp. A call creek is in ウォバッシュ tp. in the north of the Fulton township. Van Buren tp. where B da Bergh town is in has stone Braff. North show knee tp. has Fountain and Rob Roy. Riverside of the Davis township in the opposite bank of the Warren county independence [45].

Abandoned village

Kozanchou string town was to the south from ウォバッシュ township, the co-bottle ton city in the late 19th century, but does not exist now. In the county particularly the southwestern part with some coal mine shafts [46].
