La Vida announced in 2008 incorporates many of the theme of body design from Neeza (哪吒) which was exhibited at the 2006 Beijing Motor Show. Lavida is recognized as the first mass-market VW compact car that China's joint venture partner led the development. It is based on the Volkswagen · PQ 34 platform and is brotherly related to Mk 4 (manufactured by FAW VW in China). Two types of engines were initially prepared: 1.6 L or 2.0 L.

Since 2009 Shanghai VW Lavida 1.4 TSI Sports was announced. It is equipped with common engine with FAW VW's Sagitar TSI (Jetta Mk 5). Shanghai VW also exhibited the Blue Motion concept of La Vida, but this is not planned to be marketed.

In 2010, Shanghai VW exhibited the e-Ravida concept at the Beijing Motor Show. It is part of VW's global strategy.

In 2011, 1.4 TSI cars were newly set to 2 grades, and either 5-speed manual or 7-speed DSG was prepared.
