Elmpoli

Elmpoli(:Ερμούπολη/ _ Ermoúpoli _) is a major city located in the province. It is also the capital of the South Aegean province.

This town means "the town", whereElm police(:Ἑρμούπολις/ Ermoupolis, Hermoupolis ).

Geography

It is a port city located in the central part of the east coast of Siros.

history

The town of Elmpoli was built as an extension of the already existing village during the 1820s. Immediately the town became a commercial and industrial center and the importance of Elmopoli Port increased. Established in Elmpoli in 1856, it was famous and a number of ships were built at shipyards. In the nineteenth century it was robbed of its position and the town declined in the following decades. However, by now based on the service industry, the economy of Elmpoli grew rapidly.
