Geology

Like other Slot Canyons, Antelope Canyon has formed hundreds of years of erosion created by the erosion of the surrounding (here, Navajo sandstone), mainly due to flash erosion, in addition to flash floods . Especially during the rainy season the rain falls in a valley that is part of the Antelope Canyon and as it flows through a narrower passageway the water accelerates and picks up the sand. If the passage is subsequently eroded over a long period of time, the narrow passage will become even wider and the sharpness of the rock will be made smoother to shape the "flowing" features of the rock. Thus a unique rock path was completed over a long period of time.

Tourism

Antelope Canyon is a popular place for photographers and tourists, and it is also a source of tourism business in the Navajo Forest District (Navajo Nation).

Upper Antelope Canyon

In the word of Navajo, "Tse Wiganilini" (Tse Upper Antelope Canyon, also called bighanilini, is exactly at the position of 111 degrees 22 minutes 20 seconds west latitude 36 degrees 51 minutes 28 seconds north latitude. This place is the place most visited by tourists, but there are two reasons for it. One is because its entrance and full length are at the same height as the surface of the earth, there is no need to climb a rock etc. Another reason is that direct incidence from the opening of the canyon parietal occurs more frequently in the upper, antelope and canyon than in the lower to antelope canyon. Especially during the summer, this sunlight is often seen when the sun rises high in the sky.

Lower Antelope Canyon

Another name of Hasdeztwazi, the Lower-Antelope Canyon, which means "a spiral rock arch" in Navajo's words, is located several kilometers away from the Upper Antelope Canyon. Before the iron stairs were installed, I had to climb a certain place or ladder to visit the Canyon. Even now with stairs in place, there are many long and narrow places, as well as scaffolding through the whole, it is difficult to walk in comparison with the upper, antelope and canyon. Although in such a restricted state, Lower Antelope Canyon is attracting a considerable number of photographers, but few tourists visit from the Upper Antelope Canyon for merely sightseeing purposes.

Risk of flash floods

Antelope Canyon is mostly tourists visiting exclusively with a guided tour because the rain that unexpectedly falls during the monsoon season makes the canyon flooded. Rain falling from near and above the canyon does not necessarily get intense, but rain falling at a few ten miles away, which is the "upstream" of the canyon, will almost always pour into the canyon without prior notice. As an example of past accidents, 11 accidents occurred as a victim of flash floods by 11 tourists who were visiting Lower Antelope Canyon. It rained hardly on the Canyon that day.
